Sigils
Sigils are a unique armor upgrade introduced in the Trespasser DLC that offer powerful, often double-edged, stat modifications. Unlike other armor upgrades, Sigils occupy a dedicated slot on your armor and cannot be removed once applied. This permanent nature means careful consideration is paramount before slotting one. Their effects are typically significant, providing a substantial buff to one area while imposing a notable penalty to another. Understanding these trade-offs is key to optimizing your party's performance, especially on higher difficulties.
Acquiring Sigils
Most Sigils are found as loot during the Trespasser DLC campaign. Keep a keen eye out for them in chests and from defeated enemies, particularly bosses and mini-bosses. Some are also quest rewards. Here are some notable Sigils and their general acquisition points:
- Sigil of the Great Bear: Often found early in the Trespasser campaign, particularly in the Elven Mountain Ruins or the Crossroads areas.
- Sigil of the Deep Roads: As the name suggests, this Sigil is typically located within the Deep Roads section of the DLC.
- Sigil of Deathroot: Can be acquired during the main questline of Trespasser, often dropped by specific enemies or found in significant loot caches within the Winter Palace or Elven Mountain Ruins.
- Sigil of Felandaris: This Sigil is usually found in the later stages of the DLC, possibly in the second visit to the Winter Palace or the final Crossroads area.
Remember that loot can be somewhat randomized, so if you don't find a specific Sigil in one playthrough, it might appear in a different location or from a different enemy in another. Always thoroughly explore every area and open all chests.
Strategic Application of Sigils
The permanent nature of Sigils demands strategic thinking. You'll want to match the Sigil's effects to the specific role and build of each party member. Here's a breakdown of some common Sigils and how to best use them:
Offensive Sigils
- Sigil of Deathroot:
- Effect: +15% Attack, -50% Healing Bonus.
- Strategy: This is a straightforward damage boost for any DPS character. The healing penalty is significant, halving the effectiveness of healing potions and abilities. It's best suited for characters who can avoid damage effectively or who are not reliant on direct healing.
- Ideal for: Rogue Archers (like Sera or your Inquisitor if ranged), who can maintain distance and avoid aggro. They benefit greatly from the raw attack boost without suffering too much from reduced healing.
- Avoid for: Reavers, as their self-damaging abilities combined with reduced healing will make them incredibly fragile. Tanks and melee DPS who are frequently in the thick of combat should also generally avoid this.
- Sigil of Felandaris:
- Effect: +100% Poison Damage, -50% Attack.
- Strategy: This Sigil is highly specialized. The massive boost to poison damage comes at a severe cost to regular attack damage, making it detrimental for most builds.
- Ideal for: Very specific builds that heavily rely on poison damage, such as a Rogue with the "Toxic Cloud" ability, "Poisoned Weapons," and the "Looked Like It Hurt" passive (which benefits from poison application). Even then, the -50% attack penalty is usually too steep to justify unless you have an extremely optimized poison-centric setup.
- Avoid for: Almost every other character. The attack penalty will cripple their damage output.
Defensive and Utility Sigils
- Sigil of the Great Bear:
- Effect: +50% Guard Generation, -10% Attack.
- Strategy: An excellent choice for tanks, allowing them to generate Guard much more rapidly and maintain their defenses. The minor attack penalty is negligible for a character whose primary role is survivability and threat generation.
- Ideal for: Any Warrior tank (Cassandra, Blackwall, or your Inquisitor if a tank). This Sigil significantly enhances their ability to absorb damage and protect the party.
- Avoid for: DPS characters, as the attack penalty directly reduces their effectiveness, and they don't benefit from increased Guard generation as much as a tank.
- Sigil of the Deep Roads:
- Effect: +50% Barrier Duration, -10% Barrier Potency.
- Strategy: This Sigil is a strong contender for mages who frequently cast Barrier. Extending the duration means less frequent recasting, allowing for more offensive spells or utility. The reduced potency is a manageable trade-off, especially if your mage has high Magic or Willpower to compensate.
- Ideal for: Support Mages (like Vivienne or Solas) who prioritize keeping Barrier up on the party. It synergizes well with abilities like "Barrier" and "Fade Cloak" (for personal defense).
- Avoid for: Mages focused purely on offensive damage, as they might prefer other Sigils that boost their spell power or critical chance.
General Tips for Sigil Use
- Know Your Role: Before applying any Sigil, clearly define the role of the character. Is it a tank, a primary damage dealer, a support mage, or a utility rogue? This will guide your choice.
- Synergy is Key: Look for Sigils that enhance existing strengths or mitigate weaknesses in your build. For example, a Sigil that boosts critical chance might be great for a rogue with many critical-dependent passives.
- Consider Difficulty: On higher difficulties (Nightmare), the penalties from Sigils can be more punishing. Evaluate if the benefit truly outweighs the cost in challenging encounters.
- Experiment (with caution): While Sigils are permanent, you can always reload a save if you make a choice you regret. Before committing to a Sigil on your main save, consider testing it on a separate save or a character you're less invested in.
- Don't Force It: If a Sigil doesn't seem to fit any of your party members without creating a significant detriment, it's perfectly acceptable to leave the slot empty. An empty slot is better than a Sigil that actively harms your party's effectiveness.
By carefully considering each Sigil's effects and how they interact with your party's composition and individual builds, you can unlock powerful new strategies and overcome the toughest challenges the Trespasser DLC has to offer.
