Merchants & Vendors
Navigating the world of Thedas requires more than just a sharp blade and powerful spells; it demands smart resource management. Merchants and vendors are your primary source for acquiring new gear, crafting materials, schematics, and selling off your excess loot. Understanding where to find them, what they offer, and how to maximize your gold is crucial for any Inquisitor.
The Skyhold Quartermaster: Your Home Base Hub
Your first and most frequent stop for general supplies will be the Quartermaster at Skyhold. Located in the main courtyard, just past the main gates and to the left, this vendor offers a rotating stock of essential items.
- Location: Skyhold, Main Courtyard.
- Key Offerings:
- Basic Crafting Materials: Iron, Leather, various cloths. Useful for early-game crafting or topping up depleted stocks.
- Potions & Tonics: Health Potions, Regeneration Potions, and various resistance tonics. Always keep a healthy supply!
- Runes: Basic runes for enchanting your weapons and armor.
- Schematics: A small selection of common weapon and armor schematics. These are often entry-level but can be useful for new party members.
- Selling Loot: The Quartermaster is your go-to for offloading unwanted weapons, armor, and crafting components to earn gold.
- Strategy: Check back regularly, especially after major story quests or exploring new areas. Their stock refreshes periodically, and you might find a useful upgrade or schematic. Prioritize selling junk items marked with a coin icon to free up inventory space and earn quick cash.
Val Royeaux Merchants: High-End Gear & Crafting
The bustling capital of Orlais, Val Royeaux, is home to several specialized merchants offering more advanced goods than your Skyhold Quartermaster. These vendors are essential for acquiring powerful schematics and unique items.
- Location: Val Royeaux, various stalls and shops throughout the market district.
- Key Merchants & Offerings:
- Armor Merchant: Found in the main market square. Specializes in higher-tier armor schematics and pre-made armor pieces. Look out for schematics like the Superior Battlemaster Mail or unique armor sets.
- Weapon Merchant: Also in the main market square. Offers advanced weapon schematics (e.g., Masterwork Greatsword Schematic) and powerful pre-enchanted weapons.
- Crafting Material Merchant: This vendor often sells rare crafting materials that are difficult to find in the wild, such as Dragon's Breath or Fade-Touched Obsidian. These are crucial for crafting masterwork items.
- Accessory Merchant: Sells rings, amulets, and belts with various stat bonuses. While some are basic, others can provide significant boosts to your party members.
- Strategy: Val Royeaux merchants are where you'll spend a significant amount of your accumulated gold. Prioritize purchasing high-tier schematics that align with your party's builds. Rare crafting materials are expensive but worth the investment for endgame gear.
Hissing Wastes Merchant: The Canyon's Secrets
Deep within the treacherous Hissing Wastes, you'll discover a unique merchant offering some of the game's most sought-after schematics. This vendor is not easily found and requires some exploration.
- Location: Hissing Wastes, within the Canyon Merchant's Guild Camp. This camp is located in the northern part of the Hissing Wastes map, often requiring you to navigate through several canyons. Look for a small, fortified encampment.
- Key Offerings:
- Masterwork Schematics: This merchant is renowned for selling some of the best weapon and armor schematics in the game, such as the Superior Battlemage Armor Schematic, Masterwork Archon Staff Schematic, and various high-tier weapon schematics for all classes.
- Unique Crafting Materials: Occasionally, this merchant will stock rare and powerful crafting materials that are otherwise only found from specific high-level enemies or rare resource nodes.
- Strategy: Make the journey to the Hissing Wastes merchant a priority once you're strong enough to handle the local wildlife. The schematics here are often endgame-level and will significantly boost your party's power. Be prepared to spend a substantial amount of gold, as these items are costly.
DLC Merchants: Trespasser & Jaws of Hakkon
For those with the DLCs, additional merchants become available, offering even more powerful and unique items tailored to the challenges of these expansions.
- Trespasser DLC - Winter Palace Merchant:
- Location: Within the Winter Palace during the Trespasser DLC storyline.
- Key Offerings: Extremely high-tier schematics, unique accessories, and powerful masterwork crafting materials that are essential for tackling the DLC's challenging encounters. Look for items like the Masterwork Prowler Armor Schematic.
- Jaws of Hakkon DLC - Stone-Bear Hold Merchant:
- Location: Stone-Bear Hold in the Frostback Basin.
- Key Offerings: Schematics and items themed around the Avvar culture, often providing bonuses against specific enemy types or unique elemental resistances. You'll find powerful unique weapons and armor here.
- Strategy: These DLC merchants are designed to equip you for the toughest content. Prioritize their offerings as you progress through their respective storylines.
General Merchant Tips:
- Sell Smart: Always sell your unwanted common and uncommon gear. Even low-value items add up. Items marked as "junk" are safe to sell without a second thought.
- Crafting Focus: Don't buy pre-made gear unless it's a significant upgrade and you lack the schematic. Crafting with good schematics and materials almost always yields superior results.
- Golden Nug: After completing the "Familiar Bounds" operation at the War Table (available after reaching Skyhold), you can interact with the Golden Nug in Skyhold's Undercroft or Haven's Blacksmith area. This allows you to "sync" your collected schematics and recipes across all your playthroughs, making subsequent runs much easier for crafting.
- Bargaining: Unfortunately, there's no direct bargaining mechanic with merchants in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Prices are fixed.
