Guard & Defense Mechanics

Mastering defense is paramount to victory in Dragon Ball FighterZ. While offense often steals the spotlight, a solid understanding of guarding and defensive options will elevate your gameplay significantly. This section will break down the core defensive mechanics, offering actionable strategies to withstand your opponent's onslaught.

Basic Guarding: Standing vs. Crouching

The foundation of defense lies in basic guarding. Holding back on your directional input (or 4 on a numeric keypad) will initiate a guard. However, not all guards are created equal. You must match your guard to the incoming attack:

  • Standing Guard (Hold Back): This defends against high and mid-level attacks. Most normal attacks and many special moves fall into this category.
  • Crouching Guard (Hold Down-Back): This defends against low and mid-level attacks. Crucially, it will NOT defend against overhead attacks. Many character's light (L) and medium (M) attacks, especially when initiated from the ground, are low attacks.

Strategy: The golden rule is to default to Crouching Guard. This protects you from the more common low attacks that often initiate combos. You'll need to react and switch to Standing Guard for overheads, which are generally slower and more telegraphed. Practice identifying common overheads from popular characters in the "Training Mode" found in the "Hub World" menu.

Guard Cancel (Pushblock)

Guard Cancel, often referred to as "Pushblock," is a vital defensive tool that creates space and can interrupt an opponent's pressure. While guarding, press Forward + Special (S). This consumes 1 bar of your Ki Gauge.

  • Effect: Your character will emit a burst of energy, pushing the opponent away and briefly interrupting their attack string.
  • When to Use:
    • Escape Corner Pressure: If you're trapped in the corner and your opponent is relentlessly attacking, a well-timed Guard Cancel can create enough space to escape or initiate your own offense.
    • Interrupt Block Strings: Against opponents who rely on long, repetitive block strings, Guard Cancel can break their rhythm and force them to rethink their approach.
    • Punish Predictable Offense: If an opponent always follows up a certain attack with another, a Guard Cancel can leave them vulnerable.

Item Location: There are no specific "items" for Guard Cancel; it's a universal mechanic available to all characters from the start of the game. However, managing your Ki Gauge (visible at the bottom of the screen) is crucial, as each use costs 1 bar.

Reflect

Reflect is a powerful defensive maneuver that not only blocks an attack but also pushes the opponent back, creating a significant advantage. To perform a Reflect, press Back + Special (S) while guarding.

  • Effect: Your character will momentarily glow and deflect the incoming attack, pushing the opponent away. Unlike Guard Cancel, Reflect does not cost Ki.
  • Advantages over Guard Cancel:
    • No Ki Cost: This makes it a more sustainable defensive option.
    • Greater Pushback: Reflect generally pushes the opponent further away than a Guard Cancel, providing more breathing room.
    • Can Deflect Projectiles: Many projectiles can be reflected, turning the tables on zoning characters.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Strict Timing: Reflect has a tighter input window than Guard Cancel, requiring more precise timing.
    • Vulnerable to Grabs: Reflect does not protect against command grabs or normal throws.

Strategy: Practice Reflect extensively in "Training Mode." Focus on timing it against common block strings and projectiles. A successful Reflect can completely reset the neutral game or even open up an opportunity for a punish.

Defensive Assists (Z-Assist)

Your teammates aren't just for offense! Z-Assists can be called upon defensively to help you out of tight situations. While guarding, pressing your Assist 1 (L1/LB) or Assist 2 (L2/LT) button will call your chosen assist character to perform their assist attack.

  • Effect: The assist character will appear and execute their designated assist move. This can disrupt the opponent's pressure, create a defensive wall, or even hit them out of an attack.
  • Strategic Uses:
    • Interrupting Combos: If you're caught in a combo, a well-timed assist call can sometimes break the opponent's rhythm, although this is generally less reliable than other defensive options.
    • Creating Space: Many assists have good hitboxes that can push opponents away, giving you time to recover or switch characters.
    • Covering Character Swaps: If your point character is low on health, calling an assist before a "Z-Change" (character swap) can provide cover and prevent the opponent from punishing your switch.

Team Composition: When building your team in the "Team Select" screen, consider assists that offer strong defensive utility. For example, assists with large hitboxes (like Goku's A-Assist or Vegeta's A-Assist) or assists that track the opponent can be excellent defensive tools.

Sparking Blast

Sparking Blast is your ultimate comeback mechanic, offering both offensive and defensive benefits. While guarding, pressing Heavy (H) + Special (S) will activate Sparking Blast, consuming all your Sparking Blast charges (indicated by the yellow gauge near your health bar).

  • Defensive Benefits:
    • Invincibility Frames: Upon activation, your character gains a significant period of invincibility, allowing you to escape combos or intense pressure.
    • Health Regeneration: While Sparking Blast is active, your blue health (recoverable health) regenerates rapidly.
    • Combo Breaker: If activated while being hit, it acts as a "combo breaker," immediately knocking the opponent away and ending their combo.

When to Use:

  • Last Character Standing: Sparking Blast's duration increases with fewer characters remaining. Activating it when your last character is on the field can turn the tide of battle.
  • Escape Lethal Combos: If you're about to be defeated by a long combo, Sparking Blast can save you.
  • Reset Neutral: Use it to get out of a bad situation and reset the fight to a neutral state.

Important Note: Sparking Blast is a limited resource. You typically get one per match (or more in specific game modes). Use it wisely!
