Multiplayer & Co-op
Dragon Quest Builders 2 offers a fantastic multiplayer experience, allowing you to team up with up to three other Builders to construct, explore, and complete challenges together on your Isle of Awakening. This guide will walk you through setting up and making the most of your co-op adventures.
Unlocking Multiplayer
Before you can invite friends or join their worlds, you must first progress through the main story. Multiplayer functionality is unlocked after completing the initial tutorial island, the Isle of Awakening, and then finishing the first major story island, Furrowfield Farm. Once you return to the Isle of Awakening after Furrowfield, the ability to use the "Communal Workbench" will become available.
Starting a Multiplayer Session
To begin a multiplayer session, follow these steps:
- Locate the Communal Workbench: This special workbench is found on the Isle of Awakening. It's distinct from your regular Builder's Workbench.
- Interact with the Communal Workbench: Approach and interact with it. You'll be presented with options for multiplayer.
- Choose Your Role:
- Host: Select "Invite Friends" or "Open to Public" to host a session on your Isle of Awakening. Inviting friends allows you to send direct invitations to players on your platform's friends list. Opening to public will allow anyone to join, though this is generally less recommended for a focused building experience.
- Join: Select "Join a Friend's Island" to see a list of available sessions hosted by your friends.
- Confirm Settings: If hosting, you can set various permissions for guests, such as whether they can destroy blocks, place blocks, or access chests. It's highly recommended to discuss these with your co-op partners beforehand to avoid accidental damage or resource depletion.
Multiplayer Limitations and Considerations
While co-op is incredibly fun, there are a few important limitations to be aware of:
- Isle of Awakening Only: Multiplayer is exclusively available on the Isle of Awakening. You cannot visit story islands (like Furrowfield, Khrumbul-Dun, Moonbrooke) or explorer shores (like Soggy Skerry, Coral Cay) with other players.
- Story Progression: Only the host player's story progression is affected. Guests cannot progress their own main story by participating in another player's world.
- Blueprint Building: When working on large blueprints, all You can contribute by placing blocks. This significantly speeds up construction of massive projects. However, be mindful of the "Blueprint Limits" – while you can have multiple blueprints active, each has a maximum number of blocks it can contain. Exceeding this limit will prevent further blocks from being placed on that specific blueprint until it's completed or adjusted.
- Item Limits: Be aware of the overall "Item Limit List" for your island. While you can build extensively, there are hard and soft limits on the total number of unique items and blocks that can exist on your island. Coordinating with your co-op partners on resource management and building plans can help prevent hitting these limits prematurely.
- Shared Inventory (Optional): While guests generally have their own inventory, you can set up shared storage solutions like chests or wardrobes for easier resource sharing. Designating a "Community Storage Room" with multiple chests can be very efficient.
- Communication is Key: Utilize in-game chat or external voice chat to coordinate tasks, share resources, and plan your builds effectively. Clear communication prevents misunderstandings and makes the co-op experience much smoother.
Strategies for Effective Co-op Building
Working together can make even the most ambitious projects manageable. Here are some strategies:
- Divide and Conquer: Assign specific roles or areas to each player. One player could focus on gathering resources (e.g., "Earth Blocks" from the nearby mountains, "Wood" from forests), another on crafting specific items (e.g., "Stone Walls," "Wooden Doors" at a "Builder's Workbench"), and a third on placing blocks for a blueprint.
- Resource Hubs: Designate a central location for all gathered resources. A well-organized "Storage Room" with labeled chests (e.g., "Wood & Plants," "Stone & Ore," "Food Items") will save immense time.
- Blueprint Specialization: If building a complex structure with multiple blueprints, assign each player to a different blueprint section. For example, one player builds the "Outer Walls Blueprint," while another works on the "Interior Rooms Blueprint."
- Exploration Teams: When venturing to explorer shores (which you can do individually even if others are on your Isle of Awakening), coordinate what resources each player will focus on bringing back. This prevents redundant trips and maximizes efficiency.
- Creative Collaboration: Don't be afraid to brainstorm ideas together! Some of the most impressive builds come from combining different creative visions.
Enjoy building your dream island with friends, and remember that teamwork makes the dream work in Dragon Quest Builders 2!
