Understanding Tension

Tension is a character-specific gauge that builds up during combat. As your character deals damage, takes damage, or uses certain abilities, their Tension meter will gradually fill. You'll notice a visual cue around your character when their Tension is rising. Once the meter is full, your character enters a "High Tension" state, indicated by a glowing aura and a change in their battle theme music.

Building Tension:

Attacking Enemies: Landing hits, especially with combos and abilities, is the primary way to build Tension.
Taking Damage: While not ideal, receiving damage also contributes to your Tension gauge.
Using Specific Skills: Some character skills and abilities are designed to generate Tension more quickly. For example, Lazarel's "Oomph" skill can not only boost his attack but also subtly increase Tension generation.

High Tension State:

During High Tension, your character becomes invincible, takes no damage, and has unlimited MP for a short duration. This is your window to unleash powerful attacks without fear of interruption.

Unleashing the Coup de Grâce

Once a character is in High Tension, you have a limited time to activate their unique Coup de Grâce. This is a powerful, character-specific ultimate attack that deals massive damage to all enemies within its area of effect.

Enter High Tension: Fill your character's Tension gauge completely.
Activate Coup de Grâce: While in High Tension, press the designated Coup de Grâce button (typically indicated on-screen, often a combination of attack buttons or a dedicated special attack button).
Targeting (if applicable): Some Coup de Grâce abilities allow for a brief targeting phase. Aim for the densest group of enemies or the boss's weak point for maximum impact.

Strategic Tips for Tension & Coup de Grâce

Boss Fights: Always aim to save your Coup de Grâce for boss encounters. The invincibility and massive damage output can be invaluable for breaking through a boss's defenses or finishing them off when their health is low. Consider coordinating with your AI companions or other players to unleash multiple Coup de Grâce attacks in quick succession for devastating results.
Monster Swarms: If you're overwhelmed by a large number of regular monsters, a well-placed Coup de Grâce can instantly clear the area, giving you breathing room and protecting your objective.
Character Synergy: Different characters have different Coup de Grâce effects. For example, Teresa's Coup de Grâce might focus on a wide area of effect, while Cesar's might be a concentrated single-target burst. Understand each character's strengths and deploy them accordingly.
Tension Management: Don't waste your High Tension state. If you enter High Tension but there are no immediate threats or a boss is invulnerable, try to hold off on activating the Coup de Grâce until a more opportune moment. The invincibility and unlimited MP can still be used to your advantage during this time.
