Leveling and Experience
In Dragon Quest II, careful management of your party's experience and levels is crucial for overcoming the game's many challenges. Unlike the first Dragon Quest, you now have a party of three, and experience is shared amongst them. This section will guide you through efficient leveling strategies, key grinding spots, and how to maximize your gains.
Understanding Experience Gain
- Shared Experience: All active party members (the Prince of Midenhall, the Prince of Cannock, and the Princess of Moonbrook) receive the full experience points from defeated monsters, regardless of who landed the final blow or how much damage they dealt. This means you don't need to worry about "kill stealing" or uneven distribution.
- No Experience from Fleeing: Successfully fleeing from battle yields no experience points. Only victories count!
- Death Penalty: If a character falls in battle, they do not receive experience points for that specific encounter. It's often worth using herbs or healing spells to keep everyone alive, especially during critical grinding sessions.
Early Game Grinding (Midenhall & Cannock)
Your journey begins with the Prince of Midenhall alone. Focus on building his strength before recruiting the Prince of Cannock.
Midenhall Area (Levels 1-5)
Before venturing too far, spend some time around Midenhall Castle. The monsters here are relatively weak, making for safe early-game experience.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Slime: (1 EXP) Your bread and butter for early levels. Easy to defeat.
- Big Slime: (2 EXP) A slightly tougher variant, but still manageable.
- Horned Rabbit: (3 EXP) Offers decent experience for the challenge.
- Strategy: Stick close to Midenhall. Fight a few battles, then return to the castle to heal for free at the Inn. Purchase basic equipment like the Club and Leather Armor as soon as possible. Aim for Level 4-5 before heading towards Cannock.
Cannock Area (Levels 5-8)
Once you've recruited the Prince of Cannock, your party's combat effectiveness significantly increases. The area around Cannock Castle and the road to the Lake Cave are good for leveling up both princes.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Antbear: (4 EXP) Provides good experience and is not too challenging for two characters.
- Attacker: (5 EXP) A bit tougher, but offers more experience.
- Healslime: (6 EXP) Can heal itself, so focus fire to defeat it quickly.
- Strategy: With two characters, you can take on slightly more challenging foes. The Prince of Cannock's healing spells (Heal) will conserve your herbs. Grind until both princes are around Level 7-8 before attempting the Lake Cave to find the Princess of Moonbrook.
Mid-Game Grinding (Moonbrook & Beyond)
With the Princess of Moonbrook in your party, you now have access to offensive magic, opening up new grinding possibilities.
Moonbrook Area (Levels 8-12)
After rescuing the Princess, the area around Moonbrook Castle and the nearby forests are excellent for gaining levels for your full party.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Ghost: (8 EXP) Easily dispatched with the Princess's offensive spells like Sizz.
- Magician: (10 EXP) Can cast spells, so prioritize them. Good experience.
- Man-eater Chest: (15 EXP) A rare encounter, but offers a significant experience boost. Be cautious, as they hit hard.
- Strategy: The Princess's Sizz spell is a game-changer for clearing groups of weaker enemies quickly. Use the Prince of Midenhall for physical damage and the Prince of Cannock for support and healing. Aim for Level 10-12 before tackling the tougher dungeons like the Dragon's Horn.
Dragon's Horn & Sea Travel (Levels 12-18)
Once you acquire the Ship, a whole new world of grinding opens up. However, the Dragon's Horn dungeon itself is a great place to gain levels before that.
- Dragon's Horn: The monsters within the Dragon's Horn offer significantly more experience than those outside. Be prepared for tougher fights.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Giant Anteater: (18 EXP) A common and rewarding foe.
- Metal Slime: (1350 EXP) *Extremely Rare!* These elusive creatures offer massive experience. They have high defense and often flee, so if you encounter one, focus all attacks on it. The Prince of Cannock's critical hits or the Prince of Midenhall's strength are your best bet.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Open Sea: Once you have the Ship, sailing the seas, particularly around the larger continents, will pit you against stronger enemies.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Merman: (20 EXP) Common sea enemy, good for consistent gains.
- Sea Slime: (25 EXP) Another reliable sea monster.
- Great Viper: (30 EXP) A more dangerous but rewarding encounter.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Strategy: For Metal Slimes, consider saving your game frequently and reloading if they flee without being defeated. The Dragon's Horn can be challenging, so ensure your party is well-equipped with items like Medical Herbs and the Princess has enough MP for Sizz.
Late Game Grinding (Before Rhone)
As you approach the final stages of the game, particularly before entering the grueling Cave to Rhone, significant leveling will be necessary.
Hadenfel Area & Cave to Rhone Entrance (Levels 20-30+)
The areas around Hadenfel and the initial sections of the Cave to Rhone are prime spots for late-game experience.
- Recommended Monsters:
- Gold Bat: (45 EXP) A common and relatively easy enemy for this stage.
- Wizard: (60 EXP) Can cast powerful spells, but offers good experience.
- Mega Slime: (80 EXP) A stronger version of the Slime, good for consistent gains.
- Metal Babbles: (10000 EXP) *The ultimate grinding target!* These incredibly rare and tough monsters offer an immense amount of experience. Like Metal Slimes, they have extremely high defense and a high chance of fleeing.
- Strategy for Metal Babbles: Finding and defeating Metal Babbles is the fastest way to reach high levels.
- Location: Metal Babbles are most frequently encountered in the Cave to Rhone, particularly on the upper floors.
- Preparation: Ensure your party has high agility. The Prince of Cannock's critical hits are your best bet for dealing damage. The Prince of Midenhall's strength can also be effective.
- Tactics: When a Metal Babble appears, have everyone attack it. Do not waste turns on other monsters unless absolutely necessary. If it flees, reload your save if you're committed to power-leveling.
- Healing: Keep your party's HP high, as other monsters in the Cave to Rhone can be very dangerous.
By following these strategies and targeting the recommended monsters, you'll ensure your party is well-prepared to face Hargon and the final challenges of Dragon Quest II.
While Dragon Quest II introduced shared party experience, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age modernizes this by allowing inactive party members to gain levels simultaneously.
