Towns and Dungeons
Welcome, Luminary! This section will guide you through the treacherous lands and bustling towns of Dragon Quest II. We'll cover essential steps, hidden treasures, and strategic advice to ensure your journey is as smooth as possible.
Midenhall Castle & Surrounding Area
Your adventure begins in the regal halls of Midenhall Castle. After the initial cutscene, speak to the King to receive your first quest: find the other two descendants of Erdrick. Before venturing out, ensure you're properly equipped.
- Initial Gear: You start with a basic weapon and armor. Consider purchasing a Leather Shield from the weapon shop for 90 Gold to improve your defense.
- Item Acquisition:
- Check the dresser in the Prince's room (your starting location) for a Medical Herb.
- Explore the castle's various rooms. There's another Medical Herb in a pot near the kitchen.
- Grinding Spot: The immediate area around Midenhall is perfect for early-game grinding. Focus on defeating Slimes and Drackies to gain a few levels and accumulate gold. Aim for at least Level 3 before heading far from the castle.
- Heal Up: visit the Priest in the castle to heal your HP and MP for free.
Lake Cave
The Lake Cave is your first true dungeon, located directly south of Midenhall Castle. This is where you'll find the Prince of Cannock.
Preparation:
- Level Recommendation: It's highly recommended that the Prince of Midenhall be at least Level 4-5 before entering.
- Supplies: Stock up on Medical Herbs (at least 3-4) from the item shop in Midenhall.
Walkthrough:
- Entrance: The cave entrance is a small opening on the southern shore of the lake.
- First Floor (B1):
- Head south from the entrance. You'll encounter several branching paths.
- Take the first path leading east. Follow it to find a chest containing a Medical Herb.
- Return to the main path and continue south.
- At the next intersection, head west to find a chest with 55 Gold Pieces.
- Proceed south again. You'll soon reach a larger chamber.
- Second Floor (B2):
- From the stairs, move east. You'll quickly come across a chest containing a Wing of Wyvern. This is a crucial item for quick travel back to Midenhall.
- Continue following the path south and then west.
- You'll find the Prince of Cannock, injured, in a small alcove. Approach him to trigger a scene. He will join your party.
- Exit Strategy:
- Once the Prince of Cannock joins, use a Wing of Wyvern to instantly return to Midenhall Castle. This saves you the trouble of backtracking through the cave.
- Alternatively, you can walk back, but be mindful of your party's HP and MP, especially if the Prince of Cannock is low on health.
Post-Cave Actions: After returning to Midenhall, heal up at the castle and consider purchasing better equipment for the Prince of Cannock. A Copper Sword and Chain Mail are good initial upgrades if you have the gold.
