Boss Strategies
Conquering the formidable foes of Dragon Quest IV requires careful planning and execution. This section provides detailed strategies for each major boss, ensuring you're prepared for every challenge the Chapters of the Chosen throw your way.
Chapter 1: Ragnar McRyan
The Marquis de Léon
- Location: Burland Castle, Basement
- Recommended Level: Ragnar Level 7-9
- Preparation:
- Ensure Ragnar has the best available equipment. The Iron Lance (purchased in Burland) and Iron Shield (found in the Burland Castle treasure room) are highly recommended.
- Stock up on Medicinal Herbs (purchased in Burland for 8G each). Aim for at least 5-7.
- Strategy:
The Marquis de Léon is your first true test. He hits hard, so keeping Ragnar's HP up is paramount. Focus on a consistent offense while prioritizing healing.
- Turn 1: Attack with Ragnar.
- Subsequent Turns:
- If Ragnar's HP drops below 30, use a Medicinal Herb. Do not risk letting his HP get too low.
- Otherwise, continue to attack.
- Key Tip: The Marquis can sometimes get multiple attacks in a row. Be prepared to heal more frequently if this happens. Persistence and careful healing will win the day.
Chapter 2: Alena
The Balzack
- Location: Endor Castle, Basement
- Recommended Level: Alena, Borya, Kiryl Level 12-14
- Preparation:
- Equipment:
- Alena: Equip the Iron Claw (purchased in Endor) for maximum damage.
- Borya: Ensure he has a decent staff, like the Wizard's Staff (purchased in Endor).
- Kiryl: The Iron Lance (purchased in Endor) and Iron Shield (purchased in Endor) are good choices.
- Items: Stock up on Medicinal Herbs and a few Antidotal Herbs (purchased in Endor) in case of poison.
- Spells: Ensure Borya has Sap and Kiryl has Heal.
- Equipment:
- Strategy:
Balzack is a significant step up. He has high defense and can inflict poison. Your primary strategy will involve weakening his defense and maintaining your party's health.
- Turn 1:
- Alena: Attack.
- Borya: Cast Sap on Balzack. This is crucial for increasing your damage output.
- Kiryl: Cast Heal on anyone who took significant damage, or attack if everyone is healthy.
- Subsequent Turns:
- Alena: Continue to attack relentlessly.
- Borya: Reapply Sap if it wears off. Otherwise, cast Frizz or attack.
- Kiryl: Your main healer. Use Heal as needed. If poison is inflicted, use an Antidotal Herb or Kiryl's Squelch spell. Attack only when healing is not required.
- Key Tip: Balzack's defense is stout. Keeping Sap active is more important than Borya's direct damage. Don't be afraid to use multiple Medicinal Herbs if Kiryl falls behind on healing.
- Turn 1:
Chapter 3: Torneko Taloon
The Marquis de Léon (Again!)
- Location: Endor Castle, Basement (after Torneko helps the King)
- Recommended Level: Torneko Level 15-17
- Preparation:
- Equipment: Torneko should have the best available equipment from his shop in Lakanaba or Endor. The Steel Broadsword (purchased from Torneko's shop after expansion) and Iron Shield are good choices.
- Items: This fight is unique as Torneko is alone. Stock up heavily on Medicinal Herbs (at least 10-12). Consider bringing a few Strength Seeds (found in various locations, check the "Item Locations" section) if you want to boost Torneko's attack power.
- Strategy:
This fight is a solo endurance test for Torneko. The Marquis's stats are slightly higher than in Chapter 1. Torneko's unique ability to sometimes "miss" or "do something else" can be unpredictable, so focus on consistent damage and healing.
- Turn 1: Attack with Torneko.
- Subsequent Turns:
- If Torneko's HP drops below 40-50, use a Medicinal Herb.
- If you used any Strength Seeds, use them early in the fight.
- Otherwise, continue to attack.
- Key Tip: Torneko's "random actions" can sometimes be a blessing (e.g., hitting multiple times) or a curse (e.g., missing). Don't rely on them. Just keep his HP high and keep attacking. This fight is a war of attrition.
Chapter 4: Meena & Maya
The Balzack (Again!)
- Location: Royal Crypt, Endor
- Recommended Level: Meena & Maya Level 18-20, Oojam Level 18-20
- Preparation:
- Equipment:
- Maya: Equip the Fire Claw (found in the Royal Crypt) for a significant damage boost.
- Meena: A good staff like the Staff of Antimagic (purchased in Endor) is useful.
- Oojam: The Iron Axe (purchased in Endor) is a solid choice.
- Items: Stock up on Medicinal Herbs and Antidotal Herbs.
- Spells:
- Maya: Ensure she has Frizz, Sizz, and ideally Boom.
- Meena: Crucially, she needs Healmore. Sap is also very helpful if you want to lower Balzack's defense.
- Equipment:
- Strategy:
This encounter with Balzack is tougher than the first. He hits harder and has more HP. Your party's magical prowess and Meena's healing will be key.
- Turn 1:
- Maya: Cast Boom for area damage (if available) or Sizz.
- Meena: Cast Sap on Balzack to reduce his defense.
- Oojam: Attack.
- Subsequent Turns:
- Maya: Continue to unleash your strongest offensive spells (Boom, Sizz, Frizz).
- Meena: Maintain Sap on Balzack. Her primary role is healing with Healmore. Use it whenever a party member's HP drops significantly (below 60-70).
- Oojam: Attack. He's your consistent physical damage dealer.
- Key Tip: Balzack's physical attacks are potent. Meena's Healmore is vital for keeping the party alive. If you find your party struggling, consider having Maya use a Magic Water (found or purchased in Endor) on herself to keep her MP high for continuous spellcasting.
- Turn 1:
