Character Skills and Abilities
Understanding each character's unique skills and abilities is paramount to success in Dragon Quest IV. While some characters specialize in offensive magic or brute force, others excel in support roles or healing. Mastering their individual strengths and weaknesses will allow you to form effective party compositions for any challenge the game throws your way.
The Hero (Chapter 5)
The Hero, your customizable protagonist in Chapter 5, is a versatile powerhouse capable of both physical attacks and powerful offensive and healing spells. Their spell list expands significantly as they level up, making them an indispensable member of your party.
- Key Spells/Abilities:
- Heal/Midheal/Fullheal: Essential for keeping the party alive. Prioritize learning these.
- Sizz/Sizzle/Kafrizzle: Area-of-effect fire spells that are excellent for clearing groups of enemies.
- Boom/Kaboom: Non-elemental explosion spells, useful against enemies resistant to fire.
- Zoom: Allows instant travel to previously visited towns and locations. Invaluable for quick navigation.
- Holy Protection: Reduces encounter rates, perfect for backtracking through dangerous areas.
- Strategy: Equip the Hero with the strongest available sword and armor. Early game, focus on their healing spells. As their MP pool grows, they can become a primary damage dealer with offensive magic. utilize their physical attacks against single targets when magic isn't necessary.
Ragnar McRyan (Chapter 1)
Ragnar is a pure physical attacker with incredibly high HP and Strength. He learns no spells but compensates with powerful single-target damage and resilience.
- Key Abilities:
- Physical Attack: Ragnar's primary contribution. Always equip him with the strongest weapon available.
- High HP/Defense: Makes him an excellent tank, capable of absorbing significant damage.
- Strategy: Ragnar is your frontline brawler. Keep him equipped with the best swords (e.g., Broad Sword, Iron Axe) and heavy armor (e.g., Iron Armor, Full Plate Armor). In Chapter 1, use him to clear out enemies quickly. In Chapter 5, he remains a reliable damage dealer and a sturdy presence in your party. Consider using him to draw aggro from weaker party members.
Alena (Chapter 2)
Princess Alena is a martial artist who excels at critical hits and high agility. She has no MP and relies entirely on her physical prowess.
- Key Abilities:
- Critical Hit Rate: Alena has a naturally higher chance to land critical hits, dealing massive damage.
- High Agility: Often acts first in battle, allowing her to take out threats before they can act.
- No MP: Means she can always attack without worrying about spell points.
- Strategy: Alena is a glass cannon. While her damage output is immense, her defense can be lower than other physical attackers. Equip her with claws (e.g., Iron Claws, Falcon Knife Earrings) to maximize her attack speed and potential for critical hits. In Chapter 2, she's your main damage dealer. In Chapter 5, she's excellent for quickly dispatching high-priority targets or bosses.
Kiryl (Chapter 2)
Kiryl is a dedicated healer and support caster, essential for keeping Alena and Borya alive. He learns powerful healing and protective spells.

- Heal/Midheal/Fullheal: His core healing spells. Prioritize these above all else.
- Snooze/Kasnooze: Puts enemies to sleep, invaluable for crowd control.
- Sap/Kasap: Lowers enemy defense, making them easier to defeat.

- Strategy: Kiryl should always be focused on healing and buffing. Keep his MP high with items like Magic Water (purchasable in most towns, or found in chests like the one in Endor Castle). Equip him with staves that boost wisdom or MP, and light armor. In Chapter 2, he's vital for Alena's survival. In Chapter 5, he's your primary healer alongside the Hero.
Borya (Chapter 2)
Borya is a powerful offensive magic user, specializing in elemental attack spells and debuffs.

- Frizz/Frizzle/Kafrizz: Single-target fire spells, excellent for boss damage.
- Crack/Crackle/Kacrackle: Ice spells, useful against fire-resistant foes.

- Drain Magic: Steals MP from enemies, a useful utility spell.
- Strategy: Borya is your primary magical damage dealer. Identify enemy weaknesses and exploit them with his diverse spell list. Keep his MP high with Magic Water. Equip him with staves that boost magic power and light robes. In Chapter 2, he complements Alena's physical damage. In Chapter 5, he provides crucial elemental coverage and debuffs for challenging encounters.
Torneko Taloon (Chapter 3)
Torneko is a merchant with unique abilities tied to his luck and business acumen. He's less about direct combat and more about utility and unexpected actions.
- Key Abilities:
- Call for Help: Torneko might call a random NPC or monster to assist in battle, with unpredictable but often helpful results.
- Find Item: Occasionally finds items after battle or while walking on the world map.
- High Luck: Contributes to his unique abilities and sometimes allows him to avoid damage.
- Strategy: Torneko is a wildcard. His "Call for Help" ability can summon powerful allies or provide unexpected healing. Equip him with a strong sword (e.g., Steel Broadsword) and decent armor. In Chapter 3, focus on his merchant activities to earn money. In Chapter 5, he can be a fun, albeit less reliable, party member. His ability to find items can be a nice bonus.
Maya (Chapter 4)
Maya is a dazzling dancer and a potent offensive spellcaster, specializing in fire and explosion magic.
- Key Spells/Abilities:
- Frizz/Frizzle/Kafrizz: Her signature fire spells, capable of immense single-target damage.
- Boom/Kaboom: Powerful area-of-effect explosion spells.
- Oomph: Doubles an ally's attack power, a game-changer for physical attackers like Alena or Ragnar.
- Bounce: Reflects spells back at enemies, incredibly useful against magic-heavy bosses.
- Strategy: Maya is your burst damage mage. Use her Frizz line for single-target boss damage and Boom for clearing groups. Her Oomph spell is invaluable for boosting your physical attackers. Keep her MP topped up with Magic Water or Elfin Elixir (found in various chests, like the one in Diabolic Hall, or dropped by certain enemies). Equip her with staves that boost magic and light robes.
Meena (Chapter 4)
Meena is a fortune teller and a dedicated support and healing spellcaster, similar to Kiryl but with a different spell list focus.

- Heal/Midheal/Fullheal: Her core healing spells.
- Squelch/Tingle: Cures paralysis, essential for certain enemy encounters.
- Insulate: Reduces fire and ice damage for the entire party, crucial for elemental boss fights.
- Barrier: Significantly raises the party's magical defense.
- Zing/Kazing: Revives fallen allies. Kazing has a 100% success rate and is a must-have.
- Strategy: Meena is your primary support and secondary healer. Her Insulate and Barrier spells are vital for mitigating damage from powerful magic-using enemies and bosses. Always ensure she has enough MP for healing and revival spells. Equip her with staves that boost wisdom or MP, and light armor. In Chapter 5, she and Kiryl can form a formidable healing and support duo.
Psaro (Post-Game)
Psaro, the Demon Lord, becomes a playable character in the post-game content. He is an incredibly powerful physical attacker with access to some unique dark magic spells.
- Key Spells/Abilities:
- Physical Attack: Psaro boasts incredibly high Strength, making his normal attacks devastating.
- Disruptive Wave: Dispels all positive status effects from enemies, invaluable against buffing bosses.
- Kazap: A powerful single-target lightning spell.
- Kafrizzle: A strong single-target fire spell.
- Meditate: Restores a significant amount of his own HP.
- Strategy: Psaro is a force of nature. Equip him with the strongest available weapons (e.g., Liquid Metal Sword, Hela's Hammer) and heavy armor. Use his physical attacks for consistent damage and his spells for specific situations or when facing enemies with high physical defense. Disruptive Wave is particularly useful against the optional post-game bosses.
