Post-Game Content Overview

Congratulations, Chosen One! Defeating Psaro the Manslayer is a monumental achievement, but your adventure in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen doesn't have to end there. The post-game offers a wealth of additional challenges, powerful equipment, and even a secret dungeon to explore. This section will guide you through all the optional content available after the credits roll.

The Secret Dungeon: Fungeon

The primary post-game content is the unlockable secret dungeon, often referred to as the "Fungeon" or "Bonus Dungeon." This area is home to some of the game's toughest enemies and most rewarding treasures, culminating in a battle against an optional super-boss.

Unlocking the Fungeon

Return to the World Map: After defeating Psaro and viewing the ending, reload your save file. You will typically be placed back at the last church you visited before the final boss.
Visit the Zenithian Castle: Fly your Zenithian Dragon to the Zenithian Castle, located high above the clouds.
Speak to the Zenithian King: Head to the throne room and speak with the Zenithian King. He will acknowledge your victory and inform you of a new, powerful threat that has emerged, hinting at the secret dungeon's location.
Locate the Entrance: The entrance to the Fungeon is not immediately obvious. You must fly the Zenithian Dragon to the small island directly south of the Zenithian Castle. Look for a small, dark patch on the island's surface – this is the entrance. Land the dragon and enter.

Navigating the Fungeon

The Fungeon is a multi-floor dungeon with increasingly difficult encounters. Be prepared for:

High-Level Enemies: Monsters here are significantly stronger than anything you've faced before, often possessing high HP, powerful attacks, and disruptive status effects. Ensure your party is well-leveled (ideally Level 50+) and equipped with your best gear.
Complex Layouts: The dungeon features intricate pathways, hidden areas, and occasional puzzles. Pay close attention to your surroundings and be ready to use spells like Zoom and Evac if you need to retreat.
Valuable Treasures: Throughout the Fungeon, you'll find chests containing rare and powerful items, including unique weapons, armor, and accessories. Do not miss these!

Key Items and Equipment in the Fungeon

While specific item locations can vary slightly, some notable treasures to seek out include:

Liquid Metal Armor: An incredibly defensive piece of armor, often found on one of the deeper floors.
Metal King Shield: Another top-tier defensive item, providing excellent protection against various attacks.
Meteorite Bracer: An accessory that significantly boosts a character's Agility, allowing them to act earlier in combat.
Gringham Whip: A powerful whip for Alena or Maya, capable of hitting multiple enemies.
Ultimate Key: While not found in the Fungeon itself, the Ultimate Key (obtained during the main story) is essential for accessing some locked doors within the dungeon that lead to additional treasures.

The Fungeon's Super-Boss: Empyrea

At the very end of the Fungeon, you will encounter the optional super-boss, Empyrea. This battle is a true test of your party's strength and strategy.

Preparation is Key:
- Levels: Aim for your party members to be at least Level 60, preferably higher.
- Equipment: Equip your absolute best gear, prioritizing defense and magic resistance. Consider items that protect against status effects.
- Items: Stock up on healing items (Yggdrasil Dew, Yggdrasil Leaf), MP recovery items (Elfin Elixir), and status-curing items (Panacea, Moonwort Herb).
- Party Composition: A balanced party with strong physical attackers (Ragnar, Alena), powerful magic users (Maya, Borya), and reliable healers (Kiryl, Hero) is crucial. Torneko can also be surprisingly effective with his unpredictable item usage.
Battle Strategy:
- Buffs and Debuffs: Start by casting defensive buffs like Insulatle (to reduce breath damage) and Kabuff (to raise defense). Debuff Empyrea with spells like Sap (to lower defense) and Kasap (if available).
- Healing: Kiryl should focus almost exclusively on healing with Multiheal and Omniheal. The Hero can assist with Healall or Fullheal.
- Damage: Alena and Ragnar should focus on physical attacks. Maya can use powerful offensive spells like Kaboom or Boom, while Borya can use Kafrizzle.
- Resurrection: Be prepared for party members to fall. Have multiple characters capable of casting Zing or using Yggdrasil Leaf.
Reward: Defeating Empyrea will grant you significant experience and a unique, powerful item, often a weapon or accessory that further enhances your party's capabilities.

Completing Your Monster Book and Item Encyclopedia

For completionists, the post-game is the perfect time to fill out your in-game encyclopedias. Many rare monsters, especially those found in the Fungeon, will complete your Monster Book. Similarly, the unique treasures and drops from these enemies will help you finish your Item Encyclopedia.

Monster Book: Revisit areas you may have rushed through, and specifically target the new monsters in the Fungeon.
Item Encyclopedia: Collect all unique equipment from the Fungeon, and consider farming specific rare monster drops if you're missing any.

Level Grinding and Character Optimization

Even after defeating the final boss and the super-boss, you can continue to strengthen your party. The Fungeon is an excellent place for level grinding due to the high experience points offered by its monsters. You can also experiment with different party compositions and equipment setups to create the ultimate team.

Metal Slime Hunting: The Fungeon often contains Metal Slimes, Liquid Metal Slimes, and even Metal King Slimes, which provide massive amounts of experience points. Use spells like Hocus Pocus (if you have it) or critical hit-focused characters like Alena to take them down quickly.
Best-in-Slot Gear: Ensure every character has their absolute best possible equipment, including weapons, armor, shields, and accessories. Many of these can be found in the Fungeon or purchased in the late-game towns.
