Party Management & Tactics
Mastering your party composition and combat tactics is crucial for overcoming the many challenges in Dragon Quest V. Unlike previous titles, you'll be recruiting a diverse array of monster allies alongside your human companions. This section will guide you through optimizing your team for various situations and maximizing their potential.
Recruiting Monsters: The Heart of Your Team
Your monster companions are often more powerful and versatile than human characters. Understanding how to recruit and utilize them is key to success.
- Recruitment Chance: After certain battles, a monster might offer to join your party. This chance is often influenced by the monster's species and your party's overall strength. Keep fighting the monsters you want to recruit!
- Essential Early Recruits:
- Slime: Found near Whealbrook and Roundbeck. A reliable early-game tank with decent stats.
- Brownie: Common around Roundbeck and Uptaten Towers. Excellent physical attacker.
- Healslime: Encountered in the areas surrounding Uptaten Towers. A fantastic early healer, often learning powerful healing spells quickly. Prioritize recruiting one!
- Monster Den: Once you gain access to the Monster Den (after the events in Hay village), you can manage your recruited monsters more effectively. This allows you to swap out active party members and store others for later use.
Optimizing Your Active Party
Your active party consists of four characters. Balancing offense, defense, and support is vital.
- Early Game (Childhood Arc):
- Hero: Your main damage dealer and often the most resilient.
- Prince Harry: Joins temporarily. A decent physical attacker.
- Healslime: Your primary healer. Keep its MP high.
- Brownie/Slime: Provides additional physical damage or tanking.
- Mid Game (Adulthood Arc - First Half):
- Hero: Continues to be a strong all-rounder.
- Wife (Bianca/Flora/Deborah): Each wife offers unique strengths.
- Bianca: Good offensive magic and decent physical attacks.
- Flora: Powerful healing and support magic.
- Deborah: High physical attack and some unique skills.
- Golems/Great Dragons: As you progress, consider recruiting stronger monsters like the Golem (found in the Volcano Cave area) or Great Dragon (encountered in the areas around Monstroferrato). These monsters offer immense physical power and high HP.
- Healslime/Cureslime: Continue to be invaluable healers. The Cureslime (found later in the game) is an upgraded version of the Healslime.
Combat Tactics: Directing Your Team
While the AI can be helpful, direct control is always superior for tough battles.
- "Tactics" Menu: Access this menu during battle to set AI behaviors for your party members.
- "Show No Mercy": Aggressive, focuses on attacking. Good for physical attackers.
- "Fight Wisely": Balances offense and defense, using spells and items as needed. A good default for most characters.
- "Focus on Healing": Prioritizes healing and support spells. Ideal for your dedicated healers like Healslime.
- "Don't Use MP": Conserves MP, only using regular attacks. Useful for grinding or when MP is low.
- "Follow Orders": Gives you full manual control over the character's actions each turn. Essential for boss fights and complex encounters.
- Targeting: Always prioritize dangerous enemies. Mages, healers, and enemies with debilitating status effects should be taken out first.
- Status Effects: Don't underestimate the power of status effects. Spells like Snooze, Sap, and Decelerate can turn the tide of battle. Ensure your party has access to items like Antidotal Herbs (purchased in most towns) and Wake-Up Dust (found in chests or dropped by certain monsters) to counter enemy status effects.
- Item Usage: Keep a stock of healing items like Medicinal Herbs and Strong Medicines on hand. Don't be afraid to use them to save MP or in emergencies.
Equipment Management
Always ensure your party members have the best available equipment.
- Regular Upgrades: Check weapon and armor shops in every new town you visit. For example, in Fortuna, you can purchase the Iron Armour and Steel Broadsword, significant upgrades from earlier gear.
- Monster Equipment: Monsters can equip specific types of gear. Pay attention to their equipment slots and provide them with appropriate weapons and armor to boost their stats.
- Accessory Slots: Don't forget accessories! Items like the Strength Ring (found in Uptaten Towers) or Prayer Ring (found in various dungeons or dropped by enemies) can provide valuable stat boosts or MP recovery.
