Shops & Merchants
Throughout your epic journey in Dragon Quest V, you'll encounter numerous shops and merchants offering vital equipment, restorative items, and sometimes even unique treasures. Knowing what to buy, where to find it, and when to upgrade is crucial for your party's survival and success. This section details key shopping opportunities and strategic purchasing advice.
Early Game Essentials (Childhood Arc)
During your childhood, your funds will be limited, so prioritize wisely. Focus on basic healing and essential gear upgrades for the Hero.
- Whealbrook: This is your starting point.
- Initial Visit: Purchase a few Medicinal Herbs (8G each) to keep the Hero and Pankraz healthy during early encounters. Don't overspend; you'll find some in chests.
- After Whealbrook Adit: If you have extra gold, consider a Leather Shield (90G) for the Hero. It offers a decent defense boost for the price.
- Roundbeck: A small village accessible after Whealbrook.
- Gear Up: The weapon shop here offers a Copper Sword (270G) which is a significant upgrade from the Hero's starting Cudgel. Also, look for the Leather Armour (180G).
- Item Stock: Stock up on Medicinal Herbs and consider a Antidotal Herb (10G) or two if you're frequently encountering enemies that inflict poison.
- Faery Lea: Located within the Faery Kingdom.
- Unique Finds: The shops here often carry items not found in the human world yet. Keep an eye out for any slight upgrades to your current gear, especially if you've accumulated some extra gold from battles in the Faery Lea Undergrounds.
- Coburg Castle: While not a traditional shop, ensure you collect all free items within the castle before progressing.
Mid-Game Investments (Adulthood - Part 1)
Upon your return as an adult, your needs will shift. You'll be recruiting monsters and facing tougher foes, requiring better equipment and more varied consumables.
- Heaven's Above Abbey: Your first stop as an adult.
- Basic Supplies: The merchant here primarily sells Medicinal Herbs and Antidotal Herbs. Stock up as needed.
- Fortuna: A bustling town with more robust offerings.
- Weapon Upgrades: Prioritize a Steel Broadsword (2000G) for the Hero. This weapon will serve you well for a significant portion of the game.
- Armor for All: Look for Iron Armour (1000G) and Iron Shield (700G) for the Hero and any early monster companions.
- Magic Water: Consider purchasing a few Magic Water (300G) for your spellcasters, especially if you're exploring dungeons like Abovitall Tower.
- Hay: A small village with a limited but useful selection.
- Monster Gear: If you've recruited a monster like a Slime Knight, check for Chain Mail (480G) or Scale Shield (180G) if they can equip it.
- Zoomingale: Home to Professor Toilen Trubble.
- Specialty Items: The shop here might have unique accessories or slightly better armor than Fortuna. Always check the inventory.
- Monstroferrato: A key location for recruiting monsters.
- Advanced Gear: Expect to find more powerful weapons like the Flame Boomerang (2300G) and stronger armors such as Full Plate Armour (3000G). The Flame Boomerang is excellent for clearing groups of weaker enemies.
- Healing Items: Always keep a healthy stock of Medicinal Herbs and consider Holy Water (20G) for areas with undead enemies.
Strategic Shopping Tips
- Sell Old Gear: Don't hoard outdated equipment. Sell anything your current party members can't use or that has been replaced by a superior item to free up inventory space and gain valuable gold.
- Prioritize Hero: The Hero should always have the best available equipment. Their survival is paramount.
- Monster Equipment: When you recruit new monsters, immediately check their equipable items. Often, they can use hand-me-down gear from the Hero or cheaper alternatives from shops.
- Status Cures: Always carry a few Antidotal Herbs and Wake-Up Powder (20G) to deal with common status effects. As you progress, Moonwort Balm (30G) for paralysis becomes essential.
- Save Before Big Purchases: If you're about to spend a large sum of gold on a new weapon or armor, consider saving your game first. This allows you to reload if you find a better item shortly after or realize you need the gold for something else.
- Check Every Town: Even if a town seems small, always visit its shops. Sometimes, a seemingly insignificant merchant will carry a crucial upgrade or a rare item.
