Abilities / Skills
Dragon Quest VI's ability system is intricately tied to its robust Vocation (Class) system. Unlike traditional RPGs where characters learn abilities by leveling up, in DQVI, most spells and skills are acquired by mastering specific vocations. This section will guide you through understanding, acquiring, and effectively utilizing these abilities.
Understanding Vocation Ranks and Ability Acquisition
Each Vocation has 8 ranks. As a character gains experience points in battle, they also earn "Vocation Points" (VP). Accumulating enough VP for a specific vocation will cause the character to rank up in that vocation. With each rank gained, new abilities (spells or skills) are learned. Once a vocation is mastered (all 8 ranks achieved), the character permanently retains all abilities learned from that vocation, even if they switch to a different one.
- Vocation Point (VP) Gain: VP is earned after battles, similar to experience points. The amount of VP gained depends on the difficulty of the enemies and the character's level relative to the enemies. Be aware that if a character is significantly over-leveled for an area, they may not gain VP.
- Checking Progress: You can check a character's current vocation, rank, and progress towards the next rank by accessing the "Attributes" menu and selecting "Vocation."
- Mastery Benefits: Beyond retaining abilities, mastering certain vocations also grants permanent stat bonuses or special passive effects. For example, mastering the Warrior vocation provides a permanent Strength boost.
Key Early-Game Vocations and Their Abilities
You will unlock the Vocation system after reaching Alltrades Abbey. This is a pivotal moment in the game, allowing for immense customization. Here are some recommended early-game vocations and their valuable abilities:
Warrior
A fundamental physical attacker class. Excellent for boosting offensive capabilities.
- Location: Available at Alltrades Abbey.
- Key Abilities:
- Rank 1: Leg Sweep (Skill) - A single-target attack that can occasionally trip an enemy, making them lose a turn. Useful for controlling dangerous foes.
- Rank 2: Helm Splitter (Skill) - A single-target attack that has a chance to reduce an enemy's Defense. Invaluable for boss fights.
- Rank 4: Falcon Slash (Skill) - Attacks twice in one turn. One of the best physical damage skills in the game. Prioritize getting this on your main damage dealers.
- Rank 8 (Mastery): Permanent Strength +10.
- Strategy: Assign this to your primary physical attackers (Hero, Carver, Terry) early on to maximize their damage output.
Mage
The quintessential offensive spellcaster. Essential for area-of-effect damage and elemental weaknesses.
- Location: Available at Alltrades Abbey.
- Key Abilities:
- Rank 1: Frizz (Spell) - Basic single-target fire spell.
- Rank 2: Sizz (Spell) - Basic group-target fire spell.
- Rank 3: Bang (Spell) - Basic all-target explosion spell. Crucial for clearing groups of weaker enemies.
- Rank 5: Crackle (Spell) - Group-target ice spell.
- Rank 8 (Mastery): Permanent Wisdom +10.
- Strategy: Milly and Ashlynn are prime candidates for this vocation. Consider having one character master Mage early for efficient mob clearing.
Priest
Your primary source of healing and support spells. Absolutely critical for party survival.
- Location: Available at Alltrades Abbey.
- Key Abilities:
- Rank 1: Heal (Spell) - Single-target minor healing.
- Rank 2: Squelch (Spell) - Cures poison.
- Rank 3: Midheal (Spell) - Single-target moderate healing. Your go-to healing spell for much of the early to mid-game.
- Rank 4: Snooze (Spell) - Attempts to put a group of enemies to sleep.
- Rank 8 (Mastery): Permanent Resilience +10.
- Strategy: Milly is an excellent Priest. Ensure at least one character is always progressing in this vocation. Having a secondary healer (like Ashlynn or even the Hero) learn Midheal can be a lifesaver.
Martial Artist
Focuses on critical hits and agility. A strong choice for fast, hard-hitting characters.
- Location: Available at Alltrades Abbey.
- Key Abilities:
- Rank 1: Knuckle Sandwich (Skill) - Single-target attack with a higher critical hit chance.
- Rank 2: Vacuum Slash (Skill) - Attacks a group of enemies. Good early-game group damage.
- Rank 4: Multifists (Skill) - Attacks a single enemy 2-4 times. Very powerful against bosses.
- Rank 8 (Mastery): Permanent Agility +10.
- Strategy: Carver and Terry excel here. The Hero can also benefit greatly from Multifists.
Advanced Vocation Combinations and Hybrid Abilities
Once you master two basic vocations, you unlock advanced vocations. These often combine the strengths of their prerequisites and offer even more potent abilities.
- Gladiator (Warrior + Martial Artist): Focuses on pure physical offense.
- Key Abilities: Metal Slash (deals fixed damage to Metal Slimes), Blade Boomerang (hits all enemies with a boomerang-like attack), GigaSlash (powerful all-target attack).
- Strategy: Essential for maximizing damage. Get your main physical attackers into this as soon as possible.
- Sage (Mage + Priest): The ultimate spellcaster, combining offensive and healing magic.
- Key Abilities: Multiheal (heals all allies significantly), Kazap (powerful single-target lightning spell), Magic Burst (consumes all MP for massive damage).
- Strategy: Milly or Ashlynn should aim for this. Multiheal is a game-changer for difficult encounters.
- Paladin (Warrior + Priest): A defensive and supportive warrior.
- Key Abilities: Kafrizzle (powerful single-target fire spell), Zing (revives a fallen ally), Kerplunk (sacrifices user to revive and fully heal all other allies).
- Strategy: A good option for the Hero or Carver if you want them to have more utility. Zing is invaluable.
Farming Vocation Points (VP)
To efficiently master vocations, you'll need to farm VP. Here are some prime locations and strategies:
- Early Game (After Alltrades Abbey):
- Well in Amor (Real World): The enemies around Amor, particularly the "Muddy Hands," offer decent VP for early vocations without being overly challenging.
- Undergound Waterway (Dream World): The monsters here, such as "Walking Corpses," provide good VP and are manageable.
- Mid Game:
- Gondowan Cave (Real World): The "Spiked Hares" and "Hell Hornets" here give solid VP.
- Upper World near Sorceria: The "Metal Slimes" that appear here are excellent for experience, but also provide a good chunk of VP if you can defeat them quickly.
- Late Game / Post-Game:
- Style Tower (Dream World): The "Liquid Metal Slimes" here are the best source of both experience and VP. Equip weapons like the Metal King Sword or skills like Metal Slash to take them down.
- Fungeon (Post-Game Dungeon): Contains some of the highest VP-yielding monsters, but they are also very tough.
- VP Farming Tips:
- Avoid Over-leveling: If your character's level is too high compared to the enemies in an area, they will stop gaining VP. Move to tougher areas if this happens.
- Focus on One Vocation: To master vocations quickly, focus on one per character until it's mastered, then switch.
- Utilize Party Setup: If a character is close to mastering a vocation, you might want to keep them in the active party for a few more battles to push them over the edge.
By strategically assigning vocations and understanding how abilities are acquired, you can build a powerful and versatile party capable of overcoming any challenge Dragon Quest VI throws your way.
