Post-Game - Bonus Dungeons
Congratulations, hero! Defeating Mortamor is a monumental achievement, but your journey in the realms of Dragon Quest VI isn't quite over. The post-game offers challenging bonus dungeons, powerful new equipment, and the ultimate test of your party's strength. Prepare for some of the toughest battles and most rewarding treasures in the game!
I. Unlocking the Bonus Content
To access the post-game content, you must first have successfully defeated Mortamor and watched the credits roll. After reloading your save file, you'll find yourself back in the world, ready to explore new possibilities.
- Talk to King Zenith: Your first step should be to visit King Zenith in Zenithia. He will acknowledge your victory and hint at new challenges that have emerged. This conversation is often the trigger for certain post-game events.
- The Secret Passage: Head to the area where you fought Mortamor. A new path or interaction point will now be available, leading to the first bonus dungeon.
II. The Fungeon (Optional Dungeon)
The Fungeon (sometimes referred to as the "Bonus Dungeon" or "Secret Dungeon") is a multi-floor labyrinth filled with incredibly powerful monsters and unique rewards. It's designed to push your party to its limits, so ensure your characters are at a high level (ideally 40+) and have mastered several advanced vocations.
A. Accessing the Fungeon
After defeating Mortamor, return to the Dread Realm. Navigate to the area where you faced the final boss. A previously inaccessible door or passage will now be open. Enter it to begin your descent into the Fungeon.
B. Fungeon Layout & Navigation
The Fungeon consists of several floors, each progressively more difficult. Expect intricate layouts with numerous dead ends and hidden paths. Keep your party's HP and MP topped off, as random encounters here are brutal.
- Floor 1: Primarily serves as an introduction. Focus on mapping out the area and getting a feel for the new enemy types.
- Treasure: Look for a chest containing a Mini Medal.
- Floor 2: More complex. Be wary of traps and illusionary walls.
- Treasure: You can find a Seed of Strength and a Magic Water here.
- Floor 3: Introduces more challenging enemy formations. Prioritize targets that can inflict status ailments.
- Treasure: A chest on this floor holds the valuable Sacred Armour, an excellent piece of equipment for your main hero or a strong physical attacker.
- Floor 4: The deepest level before the boss. Expect encounters with multiple high-HP, high-damage enemies.
- Treasure: Discover a Seed of Life and a Mini Medal.
C. Fungeon Boss: Nokturnus
At the very bottom of the Fungeon, you will encounter the optional super-boss, Nokturnus. This is arguably the toughest fight in the entire game, even more so than Mortamor.
- Recommended Party Setup:
- Hero: Gladiator/Hero for high damage and resilience.
- Carver: Gladiator/Hero or Dragon for immense physical output.
- Milly/Ashlynn: Sage/Luminary for powerful healing, buffs (Oomph, Sap), and debuffs.
- Healie/Cure Slime: Sage/Healer for dedicated multi-target healing (Multiheal, Omniheal) and Revive.
- Key Abilities & Spells:
- Attack: Falcon Slash, Sword Dance, Knuckle Sandwich, Multifists.
- Healing: Multiheal, Omniheal, Fullheal.
- Buffs: Oomph, Insulatle, Kabuff, Acceleratle.
- Debuffs: Sap, Kasap, Dazzle.
- Status Recovery: Tingle, Panacea.
- Strategy:
- Turn 1: Prioritize buffs. Cast Insulatle immediately to mitigate Nokturnus's breath attacks. Oomph your main damage dealers.
- Damage Output: Nokturnus has extremely high HP. Focus all physical damage on him. Magical attacks are less effective.
- Healing: Be prepared for massive incoming damage. Have at least two characters capable of casting Multiheal or Omniheal.
- Revival: Nokturnus can easily one-shot characters. Keep Revive/Kazing ready.
- Patience: This is a battle of attrition. Don't get discouraged if it takes many turns. Maintain your buffs and keep healing.
- Reward: Defeating Nokturnus earns you the prestigious Hero's Medal, a testament to your ultimate skill. More importantly, it unlocks a special ending sequence if you return to Zenithia and speak with King Zenith again.
III. The Dreamscape (DS Remake Exclusive)
For players of the DS remake, an additional post-game area called the Dreamscape becomes available. This area is tied to the Monster Master vocation and recruiting specific monsters.
A. Accessing the Dreamscape
To unlock the Dreamscape, you must first recruit a certain number of monsters to your party (typically around 50-60 unique monster types, though the exact number can vary based on regional versions). Once you've met the requirement, a new NPC will appear in a specific town (often Ghent or Somnia) who will grant you access.
B. Dreamscape Challenges
The Dreamscape is less of a traditional dungeon and more of a series of challenging monster battles. You'll face souped-up versions of regular monsters and unique monster teams. The primary goal here is to recruit rare monsters that are exclusive to this area.
- Recruitable Monsters: Keep an eye out for unique monster sprites. These often have higher recruitment rates in the Dreamscape. Some notable recruits include the Liquid Metal Slime (for easy experience) and other rare slimes.
- Rewards: Successfully completing challenges or recruiting specific monsters can yield rare items, including additional Mini Medals, powerful seeds, and unique equipment that can't be found elsewhere.
Exploring these bonus areas is the true test of a Dragon Quest VI master. Good luck, and may your swords be sharp and your spells be potent!
