Monster Recruitment & Training
Dragon Quest VII offers a unique twist on party building through its monster recruitment system. Unlike traditional Dragon Quests where monsters are foes, here they can become your allies. To recruit monsters, you'll need to defeat them in battle. Certain monsters have a chance to join your party after a victory, though this isn't guaranteed. The key to successful recruitment often lies in weakening them without defeating them outright, but the game's mechanics for this can be subtle. Keep an eye on the battle log for any indication that a monster might be willing to join.
Once a monster joins your party, they function similarly to human characters, gaining experience and leveling up. However, their true potential is unlocked through the Vocation system. Monsters can be assed to Vocations just like your human characters, allowing them to learn new skills and spells. Some monsters possess innate abilities or stat distributions that make them particularly well-suited for certain Vocations. For instance, a monster with high strength might excel in a Warrior-type Vocation, while one with a high MP pool could be a natural fit for a Mage.
Training your recruited monsters involves strategic Vocation changes. As monsters master Vocations, they retain some of the learned skills and spells even when switching to a new class. This allows for incredible customization and the creation of unique, powerful party members. Experiment with different Vocation combinations to discover potent synergies. Don't be afraid to switch Vocations frequently to learn a wide array of abilities. Remember that monster recruitment is a long-term strategy; the more monsters you recruit and train, the more diverse and powerful your party will become, offering solutions to a wide range of challenges throughout your journey.
