Party Composition & Strategy

Dragon Quest VII's extensive vocation system allows for unparalleled customization in your party's setup. However, this freedom can also be overwhelming. This section will guide you through optimal party compositions for various stages of the game, highlighting key vocations, essential skills, and strategic considerations to ensure your journey through the past is as smooth as possible.

Early Game (Before All Vocations Unlocked)

In the early hours, your party will consist of the Hero, Maribel, and Ruff. Kiefer will join temporarily. Focus on balancing offense and basic healing.

  • Hero: Your primary damage dealer and tank. Equip the best available swords and heavy armor. Prioritize Strength and Resilience.
  • Maribel: Your early-game magic user. She excels at offensive spells like Frizz and Woosh. Keep her equipped with staves and light robes to boost her Magical Might and Magical Mending. Her low HP means she's a prime target for enemy attacks, so consider placing her in the back row if available.
  • Ruff: A fast physical attacker with decent agility. His claws offer good damage, and his natural speed makes him excellent for initiating combat or delivering finishing blows.
  • Kiefer (Temporary): A powerful physical attacker. While he's with you, leverage his high Strength and HP to clear out trash mobs and contribute significantly to boss fights. Don't invest too heavily in his equipment, as he will depart.

Early Game Strategy: Focus on basic attacks for most encounters. Maribel should use offensive spells against groups or high-defense enemies. Keep a stock of Medicinal Herbs and Antidotal Herbs from the Item Shop in Estard or Ballymolloy to manage HP and status effects. The Hero's healing spells (if learned) are crucial for conserving MP on Maribel.

Mid-Game (Vocation System Unlocked - First Tier)

Once you unlock the Alltrades Abbey and the vocation system, your party's potential explodes. Focus on mastering basic vocations to unlock advanced ones.

Recommended First Tier Vocations:

  • Hero:
    • Warrior: For increased HP, Strength, and access to powerful physical skills like "Multislash" and "Helm Splitter." This enhances his role as a damage dealer.
    • Shepherd: Surprisingly useful for the Hero. Mastering it grants "Whistle" (calls monsters) and "Wool Guard" (reduces damage), but more importantly, it's a prerequisite for the Monster Masher vocation, which offers excellent stat boosts and monster-specific skills.
  • Maribel:
    • Mage: Essential for boosting her Magical Might and learning more potent offensive spells like "Boom" and "Sizz."
    • Priest: Crucial for gaining access to healing and support spells like "Midheal," "Snooze," and "Buff." This makes her a versatile magic user.
  • Ruff:
    • Thief: High Agility, access to "Steal" (for rare item drops), and "Sandstorm" (blinds enemies). This complements his speed and allows for utility.
    • Martial Artist: Boosts Agility and Strength, and provides skills like "Knuckle Sandwich" and "Vacuum Slash" for increased physical damage.
  • Gabby (Optional): If you've recruited Gabby, consider making him a Warrior or Martial Artist to capitalize on his high physical stats.

Mid-Game Strategy: Aim to have at least one character mastering a healing vocation (Priest) and one mastering an offensive magic vocation (Mage). The Hero and Ruff should focus on physical damage. Don't be afraid to switch vocations to gain specific skills, even if you don't intend to master the entire tree. For example, learning "Heal" from Priest on the Hero can be a lifesaver.

Late Game (Advanced Vocations & Optimal Builds)

By the late game, you'll have access to advanced vocations and monster vocations. This is where true specialization and power come into play.

Key Advanced Vocations & Party Roles:

  • Hero (Godhand/Champion):
    • Godhand: Achieved by mastering Warrior and Martial Artist. This vocation offers incredible Strength, HP, and access to devastating physical skills like "Gigagash" and "Omniheal." The Hero as a Godhand becomes an unstoppable force.
    • Champion: Achieved by mastering Gladiator and Paladin. Provides a balance of offense and defense, with skills like "Blade of Ultimate Power" and "Kamikazee."
  • Maribel (Sage/Druid):
    • Sage: Achieved by mastering Mage and Priest. The ultimate magic user, gaining access to powerful offensive spells like "Kaboom" and "Kazap," as well as essential healing and support spells like "Multiheal" and "Kazing."
    • Druid: Achieved by mastering Sage and Shepherd. Offers a blend of offensive and support magic, with unique skills like "Oomph" and "Magic Barrier."
  • Ruff (Hero/Pirate/Monster Masher):
    • Hero: While the main Hero is often the primary choice, Ruff can also become a Hero (by mastering Champion and Sage) for a well-rounded character with high stats and access to a wide range of skills.
    • Pirate: Achieved by mastering Thief and Sailor. Excellent Agility, good Strength, and access to "Wave of Ice" and "Tidal Wave" for area-of-effect damage.
    • Monster Masher: Achieved by mastering Warrior and Shepherd. Specializes in fighting monsters, gaining resistances and powerful monster-specific attacks. Great for grinding or specific boss fights.
  • Aira (Paladin/Luminary):
    • Paladin: Achieved by mastering Warrior and Priest. A fantastic defensive support character with access to "Kazing," "Multiheal," and "Forbearance."
    • Luminary: Achieved by mastering Dancer and Troubadour. While less focused on raw power, Luminaries offer excellent support with "Hustle Dance" (party-wide healing) and "Kerplunk."

Late Game Strategy: Your primary goal is to create a balanced party capable of both high damage output and robust healing/support. A common effective setup is:

  1. Hero: Godhand (Main physical damage, emergency healing)
  2. Maribel: Sage (Primary healer, offensive magic)
  3. Ruff: Pirate/Hero (Secondary physical damage, utility)
  4. Aira: Paladin/Luminary (Defensive support, secondary healing)

Remember to equip your characters with the best available gear. The Ultimate Equipment Guide will be invaluable here. utilize the Monster Meadows for recruiting powerful monster allies, which can also contribute to your party's overall strength through their unique skills and stat bonuses.
