Unlike some other RPGs, Dragon Quest VII does not feature extensive character creation. You play as the silent protagonist, a young boy from Estard Island. At the very beginning of the game, you will be prompted to name him. This name will stick with you throughout the entire adventure, so choose wisely! While the default name is 'Hero', you can input any name up to 8 characters long. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect your stats or abilities. Your companions, Maribel, Ruff, and Prince Kiefer, have fixed names and appearances. The game's narrative is largely driven by these pre-established characters, allowing you to focus on the story and gameplay rather than intricate character customization.
