Alchemy Pot / Item Crafting
The Alchemy Pot is an invaluable tool in Dragon Quest VII, allowing you to combine various ingredients to create powerful new items, equipment, and even some unique consumables. You won't have access to the Alchemy Pot from the very beginning of your adventure. It becomes available after a significant story event.- Progress through the story: Continue playing until you restore the present-day Engow.
- Visit the Engow Inn: After Engow is restored, speak to the Innkeeper. He will mention a peculiar pot he found.
- Receive the Alchemy Pot: The Innkeeper will then entrust you with the Alchemy Pot. From this point forward, you can access it from your main menu.
How the Alchemy Pot Works
Using the Alchemy Pot is straightforward, but finding the right recipes and ingredients is the key.- Accessing the Pot: Select "Alchemy Pot" from your main menu.
- Selecting Ingredients: You'll be presented with a list of items in your inventory. You need to select two or three specific items to combine.
- Crafting Time: Once you've selected the correct ingredients for a known recipe, the pot will begin to "cook." This process takes a certain number of steps (walking on the world map or in dungeons) to complete. The more complex or powerful the item, the longer it generally takes. You can check the remaining steps in the Alchemy Pot menu.
- Retrieving Items: Once the required steps have passed, return to the Alchemy Pot menu to retrieve your newly crafted item.
Important Note: You can only craft one item at a time. Plan your crafting queue strategically, especially for items that take many steps.
Early Game Essential Recipes
Prioritizing these recipes early on will give you a significant advantage.Healing & Utility
- Strong Medicine:
- Ingredients: Medicinal Herb + Medicinal Herb
- Effect: Restores more HP than a single Medicinal Herb. Excellent for conserving gold early on.
- Strategy: Always keep a stock of Medicinal Herbs and craft these as needed.
- Antidotal Herb:
- Ingredients: Medicinal Herb + Moonwort Bulb
- Effect: Cures poison.
- Strategy: Moonwort Bulbs are common drops from certain plant-type monsters or found in pots/barrels. Craft these instead of buying them.
Equipment Upgrades
- Copper Sword:
- Ingredients: Iron Claw + Bronze Knife
- Effect: A decent early-game sword for Maribel or Ruff.
- Strategy: Iron Claws can be found in various early dungeons or purchased. Bronze Knives are also readily available.
- Iron Shield:
- Ingredients: Pot Lid + Iron Ore
- Effect: A solid defensive upgrade for your main character.
- Strategy: Pot Lids are cheap in shops. Iron Ore is a common monster drop (e.g., from Golems) or found in specific treasure chests.
Advanced Crafting & Strategies
As you progress, the Alchemy Pot becomes even more crucial for obtaining powerful end-game gear and unique accessories.Ingredient Acquisition
- Monster Drops: Many rare ingredients are dropped by specific monsters. Consult a monster list or experiment with different enemy types. For example, Iron Ore is a common drop from Golems, and Magic Water can be dropped by certain magical enemies.
- Treasure Chests & Pots: Always thoroughly explore every area. Many valuable crafting materials are hidden in plain sight.
- Shops: While many basic ingredients are sold in shops, some rarer ones might only appear in specific towns after certain story events.
- Mini Medals: Trading Mini Medals for rare items at the Medal King's Palace can sometimes net you unique crafting components or even pre-made powerful items.
Experimentation & Recipe Books
While this guide provides some recipes, part of the fun of the Alchemy Pot is discovering new combinations.- Recipe Books: Keep an eye out for "Recipe Books" or "Alchemist's Notes" found in libraries, hidden rooms, or as quest rewards. These will automatically add new recipes to your Alchemy Pot's known list.
- Trial and Error: Don't be afraid to experiment! Save your game, try combining items, and if it fails, reload. You might stumble upon a powerful recipe before finding its corresponding book.
