Chapter Walkthroughs
The Beginning: Estard and the Ancient Sanctuary
Your grand adventure in Dragon Quest VII commences on the tranquil island of Estard. After the initial cinematic sequences introducing the Hero and your spirited friend Maribel, your immediate objective is to familiarize yourself with your home and the surrounding village.
Estard Village Exploration
- Wake Up and Errands: Your journey begins in the Hero's house. Speak with your mother, who will task you with a simple errand. Proceed to the general store within Estard Village and converse with the shopkeeper to collect the requested items.
- Village Scavenging: Take the time to thoroughly explore Estard Village. Many hidden items await discovery!
- Examine the well located in the village center to procure a Medicinal Herb.
- Visit the church and engage in conversation with the priest for valuable early-game advice and lore.
- Crucial Tip: Make it a habit to interact with all barrels, pots, and dressers you encounter. These often contain small amounts of gold (G) or essential consumables such as Antidotal Herbs.
- Hidden Item: In the house directly to the west of the general store, check the pot on the ground floor for a Plain Clothes.
- Meeting Kiefer: Your childhood friend, Prince Kiefer, will be awaiting your arrival near the entrance of Estard Castle. Follow him inside to continue the narrative.
Estard Castle Navigation
- Castle Interior: Navigate through the sprawling Estard Castle. Engage with the various guards and non-player characters (NPCs) to gather snippets of lore and helpful hints.
- Kitchen Discovery: In the castle kitchen, located on the ground floor, investigate a pot to find a valuable Plain Clothes.
- Kiefer's Chambers: Ascend to Kiefer's room. Following a brief but pivotal conversation, Kiefer will reveal a secret passage, leading you to your first true challenge.
The Ancient Sanctuary: Your First Dungeon
Following Kiefer through the secret passage, you will arrive at the Ancient Sanctuary. This serves as your introductory "dungeon" experience, featuring puzzles, combat, and the crucial Stone Tablets.
Stone Tablet Puzzle: Activating the Pedestals
Within the Ancient Sanctuary, you will encounter a series of pedestals designed to hold mystical Stone Tablets. Your primary goal here is to locate and place these missing tablets to activate a portal.
- Tablet 1 (Sparkling Spot): The first Stone Tablet is conspicuously located near the entrance of the sanctuary. Look for a distinct sparkling spot on the ground and interact with it to retrieve the tablet.
- Tablet 2 (Push Block Puzzle): Proceed further into the sanctuary. You will encounter a large, movable block. Push this block to the side to reveal a hidden path or a sparkling spot containing the second Stone Tablet.
- Tablet 3 (Suspicious Wall): Explore the walls of the sanctuary carefully. One section will appear slightly different or have a subtle crack. Interact with this "suspicious wall" to uncover the third Stone Tablet.
- Tablet 4 (Hidden Chest): In a slightly more secluded area, you might find a small, inconspicuous chest. Open it to acquire the fourth Stone Tablet.
Combat Introduction and Preparation
The Ancient Sanctuary will introduce you to the game's combat mechanics. Be prepared for encounters with early-game enemies.
- Enemies: Expect to face common foes such as Slimes, Horned Rabbits, and occasionally Dracky.
- Basic Combat: For these initial battles, simple physical attacks are sufficient. Focus your attacks on one enemy at a time to defeat them quickly.
- Healing: Keep a close watch on your party's HP. Utilize Medicinal Herbs to restore health when any character's HP drops significantly.
- Recommended Equipment: Ensure the Hero has their starting equipment. Kiefer will join you with his own gear. Maribel will be unarmed initially, but her magic will be useful later.
Activating the Portal and First Journey
- Placing Tablets: Once you have collected all the necessary Stone Tablets, return to the pedestals. The game will provide clear visual cues indicating which tablet belongs to which pedestal. Place them accordingly.
- Portal Activation: With all tablets correctly placed, the central pedestal will glow, and a shimmering portal will materialize.
- First Destination: Step into the activated portal. This will transport you and your companions to your very first destination in the distant past!
The Woodcutter's Tale: Emberdale
Upon successfully traversing the portal, you will find yourselves in a desolate, ash-covered land. This is the past iteration of Emberdale, a stark contrast to the vibrant world you left behind.
Initial Arrival and Emberdale Village
- Ash-Covered Landscape: From your starting point, head directly north. The pervasive ashfall and muted colors are key indicators of the dire situation plaguing this era.
- Emberdale Village: You will soon reach the village of Emberdale. The villagers are visibly despondent and suffering from a mysterious ailment.
- NPC Interactions:
- Speak to as many villagers as possible. They will lament their misfortune and speak of a monstrous tree that is draining the life from their land.
- Locate the Elder's house, typically the largest or most central dwelling. The Elder will elaborate on the village's predicament and point you towards the source of their suffering: a malevolent tree located in the "Monster's Den."
- Item Scavenging in Emberdale:
- In the house situated near the village entrance (often the first one you see), check a pot to discover a valuable Seed of Defense. Consider using this on the Hero for an early boost to defensive stats.
- Inside the Elder's house, thoroughly search the dresser to acquire a Leather Shield. Immediately equip this on the Hero to significantly improve their defense.
- Village Shop: Before venturing out, visit the village shop. Purchase a Cypress Stick for Maribel if you haven't found a better weapon for her, and stock up on Medicinal Herbs. Having 5-7 per character is a good starting point.
The Monster's Den: Clearing the Blight
The Elder will direct you towards the "Monster's Den," located to the east of Emberdale Village. This is where the monstrous tree, the source of the village's suffering, resides.
Preparation and Dungeon Navigation
- Party Preparation: Before entering, ensure your party is adequately equipped. The Hero should have the Leather Shield, and all characters should have sufficient Medicinal Herbs.
- Dungeon Layout: The Monster's Den is a relatively straightforward cave system, but pay attention to your surroundings.
- Enemies: You will encounter familiar foes like Slimes and Dracky, but also new threats such as Antidotes (which can poison) and Frightbats.
- Pathfinding: Follow the main path, which generally leads you deeper into the cave.
- Boulder Puzzle: You will encounter a minor environmental puzzle involving a large boulder blocking your path. Interact with the boulder and push it aside to open the way forward.
- Hidden Item: In a small alcove off the main path, you can often find a chest containing a Leather Hat. Equip this on Maribel or Kiefer.
Boss Battle: The Great Tree
At the deepest part of the Monster's Den, you will confront your first true boss: The Great Tree.
- Boss Name: The Great Tree
- HP: Approximately 120-150
- Weaknesses: Fire-based attacks (Kiefer's Flame Slash)
- Resistances: None notable at this stage.
- Attacks:
- Physical Attack: Deals moderate damage to a single target.
- "Sway": A multi-target attack that deals minor damage to the entire party.
- "Spore Cloud": Can occasionally put a party member to sleep.
- Recommended Party Level: Level 3-4 for all characters.
- Strategy:
- Hero: Focus on consistent physical attacks. Use Medicinal Herbs to heal any party member whose HP drops below 30.
- Kiefer: Kiefer's Flame Slash skill is highly effective against The Great Tree due to its fire elemental property. Use it every turn. If his HP is low, use a Medicinal Herb or have the Hero heal him.
- Maribel: Maribel's starting magic is limited, so have her use basic physical attacks. If a party member is put to sleep by Spore Cloud, use a Wake-Up Powder (if you found any) or wait for them to awaken naturally. She can also use Medicinal Herbs if the Hero is busy attacking or healing others.
- Prioritize Healing: Do not let any character's HP fall into critical levels. The Great Tree's physical attacks can be surprisingly potent for this early stage.
- Victory Rewards: Upon defeating The Great Tree, the ash will miraculously clear, and the land will begin to regain its vibrant colors. You will receive a significant amount of experience points (EXP) and gold (G).
Returning to Emberdale and Beyond
- Joyful Return: Head back to Emberdale Village. The villagers will be overjoyed by your success, and the Elder will express profound gratitude.
- Reward: As a token of their appreciation, the Elder will bestow upon you a crucial Fragment of a Stone Tablet.
- Back to the Sanctuary: Utilize the portal located within Emberdale (usually near where you first arrived) to return to the Ancient Sanctuary on Estard.
- Placing the New Fragment: Once back in the Ancient Sanctuary, approach the pedestals and place your newly acquired Fragment of a Stone Tablet on the appropriate pedestal. This action will often reveal new areas or activate new portals, paving the way for your next adventure!
