Tips & Tricks
Dragon Quest VII is a vast and rewarding adventure, but its unique mechanics can sometimes be a bit daunting. This section provides invaluable advice to help you navigate the world, master its systems, and overcome its challenges.
Early Game Essentials
- Talk to Everyone, Twice: This is a Golden Rule in Dragon Quest. NPCs often provide crucial hints, reveal hidden items, or even initiate side quests. Talking to them a second time can sometimes yield new dialogue or different information.
- Scour Every Pot and Barrel: Seriously, do it. Every town, dungeon, and even some overworld screens are littered with breakable pots, barrels, and searchable drawers. These often contain valuable items like Medicinal Herbs, Antidotal Herbs, Chimaera Wings, and even small amounts of gold. This habit will save you a lot of money in the long run.
- Prioritize Equipment: While saving for better weapons is tempting, prioritize upgrading your armor and shields first. Increased defense reduces incoming damage significantly, especially in the early game, which means fewer healing item expenditures and less time spent grinding. Visit the armor shop in Estard or Ballymolloy as soon as you have the funds.
- Grind Smart, Not Hard: Don't feel the need to over-level for every area. Instead, focus on gaining enough experience to unlock new skills and spells. The game's difficulty curve is generally fair, and strategic combat often trumps raw stats.
Vocational Mastery
The Vocation system is the heart of Dragon Quest VII's character progression. Understanding it is key to success.
- Start with Basic Human Vocations:
- Warrior: Excellent for physical attackers, providing HP and Strength bonuses. Master it for the War Cry skill and a permanent +10 Strength bonus.
- Mage: Essential for offensive spellcasting. Mastering it grants a permanent +10 Wisdom bonus and access to powerful offensive spells.
- Priest: Your primary healer and support. Master it for a permanent +10 Wisdom bonus and crucial healing spells like Heal and Midheal.
- Thief: Invaluable for stealing items from enemies. Master it for the Steal skill and a permanent +10 Agility bonus.
- Mix and Match for Advanced Vocations: Once you've mastered two basic human vocations, you can unlock advanced ones. For example:
- Gladiator: Master Warrior + Martial Artist. A powerhouse physical attacker.
- Sage: Master Mage + Priest. The ultimate magic user, combining offensive and healing spells.
- Paladin: Master Warrior + Priest. A defensive powerhouse with healing capabilities.
Plan your party's vocation paths carefully to ensure a balanced team capable of handling various threats.
- Monster Vocations: Don't overlook these! Collecting Monster Hearts and mastering Monster Vocations can grant unique skills and stat bonuses. For instance, the Slime vocation offers good early-game stat boosts and the Slime Dance skill. The Healslime vocation is excellent for additional healing.
- Permanent Stat Bonuses: Remember that mastering a Vocation grants permanent stat bonuses to the character, even if they switch to a different Vocation later. This is why mastering multiple Vocations is so beneficial.
Combat Strategies
- use Buffs and Debuffs: Don't just attack! Spells like Sap (lowers enemy defense), Decelerate (lowers enemy agility), and Oomph (raises ally attack) can turn the tide of battle, especially against bosses.
- Focus Fire: In encounters with multiple enemies, concentrate your attacks on one enemy at a time to eliminate threats quickly. Reducing the number of active enemies minimizes incoming damage.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Pay attention to enemy descriptions and observe their reactions to different spells. Some enemies are weak to fire, others to ice, and some are susceptible to status effects like sleep or paralysis.
- Defend When Necessary: The Defend command reduces damage taken by a significant amount. Use it when a powerful enemy attack is imminent, or if a character is low on HP and needs to survive until the next healing turn.
- Item Usage: Don't hoard your healing items! Medicinal Herbs, Antidotal Herbs, and Holy Water are there to be used. Running out of MP for healing spells can be disastrous, so items can bridge the gap.
Exploration and Secrets
- Tablet Shard Hunting: The primary objective of the game is to find all the Tablet Shards to restore the world. Always check suspicious-looking spots, talk to key NPCs, and explore every nook and cranny of newly accessible areas. The Shard Detector (obtained later) will be invaluable for this.
- Well-Hidden Chests: Many dungeons and towns have chests hidden behind walls, in obscure corners, or requiring specific actions to access. Keep an eye out for any visual cues that might suggest a secret passage.
- The Traveler's Hub: This area, accessed through the Shrine of Mysteries, is crucial for obtaining new Tablet Shards and progressing the story. Always check back here after completing a new island.
- Monster Meadows: Once unlocked, this feature allows you to capture monsters and send them to your own ranch. Not only is it a fun diversion, but some monsters can drop rare items or even provide unique benefits.
