Weapons are your primary source of offense in Dragon Quest VIII. Each character can equip specific weapon types, and investing skill points into those types unlocks powerful abilities. Choosing the right weapon for each character is essential for maximizing their damage output. Weapons are typically bought from shops, found in treasure chests, or crafted using the Alchemy Pot.

- Swords: Equippable by Hero and Angelo. Offer balanced attack power and access to strong single-target abilities like Falcon Slash.
- Spears: Equippable by Hero. Often have higher critical hit rates and abilities that pierce enemy defenses.
- Boomerangs: Equippable by Hero. Hit all enemies on screen, making them excellent for clearing groups of weaker foes.
- Axes: Equippable by Yangus. Provide high raw attack power and abilities that can lower enemy defense or deal massive damage.
- Scythes: Equippable by Yangus. Offer unique utility abilities like item stealing and instant death chances.
- Whips: Equippable by Jessica. Hit groups of enemies, similar to boomerangs but with less range.
- Staves: Equippable by Jessica and Angelo. Primarily boost MP, MP regeneration, and magic power, making them ideal for spellcasters.
- Bows: Equippable by Angelo. Offer good single-target damage and multi-hit abilities, effective against flying enemies.
- Fisticuffs: All characters can invest in Fisticuffs to fight unarmed. This skill tree provides stat bonuses and powerful unarmed attacks, often with high critical hit rates.
Always aim for the highest attack power weapon available, but also consider the abilities unlocked by your chosen skill tree. Some weapons have special properties, like elemental damage or status effect infliction, which can be very useful.
