Dungeons and Raids
Welcome, intrepid adventurers, to the heart of Dragon Quest X's most challenging and rewarding content: Dungeons and Raids! This section will guide you through the perilous depths and epic encounters awaiting you, offering strategies, item locations, and crucial tips to ensure your success.
The Sunken Grotto (Dungeon)
The Sunken Grotto is an early-game dungeon located just off the coast of Tantegel Castle. It's an excellent proving ground for new adventurers, offering valuable experience and essential gear. Prepare for encounters with Slimes, Drackies, and the occasional Ghost.
Preparation
- Level Recommendation: 5-8
- Equipment: Ensure you have at least a Copper Sword or better, and Leather Armor. A Small Shield is also highly recommended for reducing damage.
- Items: Stock up on Medicinal Herbs (5-7) and a couple of Antidote Herbs, as Poisonous Slimes can be a nuisance.
Walkthrough
- Entrance Chamber: Upon entering, you'll find yourself in a small chamber. Head directly south.
- First Fork: You'll reach a fork. Take the eastern path first.
- Treasure Room (East): This small room contains a treasure chest. Open it to acquire a Wing of the Wyvern. This item is invaluable for quick escapes from dungeons.
- Return and West Path: Head back to the fork and now take the western path.
- Descent: Follow this winding path downwards. Be wary of increased enemy density here.
- Second Treasure Room: You'll soon come across another small alcove to the north. Inside, you'll find a chest containing 50 Gold Coins.
- Path to the Depths: Continue following the main path south. You'll eventually reach a larger chamber with a central pillar.
- Boss Chamber Entrance: The path to the east leads to the boss chamber. Before entering, ensure your HP and MP are topped off. Use any remaining Medicinal Herbs if necessary.
Boss Battle: Grotto Guardian
The Grotto Guardian is a slightly tougher variant of a regular Golem. It hits hard but is slow.
- Strategy:
- Melee Classes: Focus on consistent attacks. Use your strongest single-target abilities.
- Magic Classes: Spells like "Frizz" or "Sizz" are effective. Prioritize reducing its defense with "Sap" if available.
- Healers: Keep your party's HP above 50% at all times. The Grotto Guardian can sometimes hit twice in a row.
- Rewards: Defeating the Grotto Guardian will grant you a significant amount of experience, 150 Gold Coins, and a chance to drop a rare Iron Claw (for Martial Artists) or a Magic Shield.
The Dragon's Maw (Raid)
The Dragon's Maw is a challenging 8-player raid designed for seasoned adventurers. Located deep within the Mountain Cave system, this raid requires coordinated teamwork and precise execution to overcome its formidable challenges and claim its legendary treasures.
Raid Composition & Roles
A balanced party is crucial for success in The Dragon's Maw. A typical setup includes:
- 2 Tanks: Paladins or Gladiators with high defense and taunt abilities.
- 2 Healers: Priests or Sages focused on keeping the party alive.
- 4 Damage Dealers (DPS): A mix of physical (Warriors, Martial Artists) and magical (Mages, Sages) DPS to maximize damage output.
Phase 1: The Wyrmkin Gauntlet
Upon entering, your raid will face a series of trash mob encounters leading to the first mini-boss. The path is linear, similar to the winding routes found in Erdrick's Cave.
- Enemies: Expect groups of Dragon Pups, Lesser Dragons, and Wyvern Knights.
- Strategy:
- Crowd Control: Utilize spells like "Sleep" or "Kasap" to manage larger groups.
- Focus Fire: Prioritize Wyvern Knights as they can deal significant damage.
- Healing: Healers should be proactive, as sustained AoE damage can be high.
Mini-Boss: Scalehide Brute
The Scalehide Brute is a large, heavily armored dragonkin. It possesses a powerful frontal cleave and a ground stomp ability.
- Location: At the end of the Wyrmkin Gauntlet, in a large cavern.
- Strategy:
- Tanks: Position the Brute away from the raid to avoid cleave damage. Use defensive cooldowns during its "Crushing Blow" ability.
- DPS: Spread out to minimize damage from the ground stomp. Focus on its flanks or rear to avoid frontal attacks.
- Healers: Be ready for burst healing after "Crushing Blow" and sustained AoE healing during ground stomps.
- Loot: Chance for Scalehide Gauntlets (Tank gloves) or Wyrmkin Scale (crafting material).
Phase 2: The Lava Flows
After defeating the Scalehide Brute, you'll enter an area characterized by rivers of lava and narrow platforms. This phase emphasizes environmental awareness.
- Hazards: Standing in lava deals continuous fire damage. Certain platforms will periodically collapse.
- Enemies: Fire Spirits, Lava Golems, and occasional Hellhounds.
- Strategy:
- Movement: Stick to the designated safe paths. Avoid unnecessary movement through lava.
- Platform Awareness: Pay attention to visual cues indicating platform instability. Move off collapsing platforms quickly.
- Lava Golems: These enemies are immune to fire magic. Prioritize physical damage against them.
Raid Boss: Ignis, the Infernal Dragon
Ignis is the final boss of The Dragon's Maw, a colossal dragon residing in a volcanic caldera. This fight has multiple phases and requires precise coordination.
Phase 1: Ground Assault
Ignis will remain on the ground, using powerful fire breath attacks and tail swipes.
- Strategy:
- Tanks: Maintain aggro and position Ignis with its back to the raid. Be prepared for high damage from "Inferno Breath."
- DPS: Spread out to mitigate damage from "Tail Sweep." Focus on Ignis's legs or wings.
- Healers: Constant healing is required. Dispel "Burning Aura" debuffs if possible.
Phase 2: Aerial Barrage
Ignis takes flight, raining down fireballs and summoning adds.
- Strategy:
- Adds: Small Fire Drakes will spawn. DPS should quickly switch targets and eliminate them before they overwhelm the healers.
- Evasion: Players must actively dodge incoming fireballs, indicated by ground markers.
- Ranged DPS: This is your time to shine! Focus fire on Ignis while it's airborne.
Phase 3: Enraged Descent
Ignis lands, becoming enraged. Its attacks are faster and hit harder. This phase is a DPS race.
- Strategy:
- All: Use all available offensive and defensive cooldowns.
- Healers: Prepare for extreme burst healing.
- Tanks: Utilize all damage mitigation abilities.
- Survival: If the fight drags on too long, Ignis's "Volcanic Eruption" ability will wipe the raid.
