Navigating the vast world of Erdrea in Dragon Quest XI S involves various modes of transportation, each suited for different terrains and distances. Mastering these methods is key to efficient exploration and timely arrival at your destinations, whether on foot, horseback, by sea, or even by the majestic Whale.

On Foot: This is your primary mode of travel, especially within towns, cities, and smaller areas. You can run by holding the RT button, which speeds up your movement considerably. Exploring on foot allows you to interact with objects, talk to NPCs, and discover hidden items.

Horseback Riding: Once you acquire a horse, you can traverse larger outdoor areas much faster. Horses are particularly useful for covering long distances across regions like the Heliodor Region or the Gallopolis Region. You can mount a horse at stables found in most major settlements. Horseback riding also allows you to access certain areas or items that might be out of reach on foot.

Ship Travel: As the story progresses, you'll gain access to a ship, which allows you to travel across the vast oceans surrounding the continents. Ship travel is essential for reaching new landmasses and exploring islands. The ship often serves as a mobile base, allowing you to rest and manage your inventory.

Whale Travel: In the later stages of the game, you'll encounter and be able to travel with a colossal creature known as the Great Sea Turtle or 'Whale.' This unique mode of transport allows you to navigate between distant continents and access areas that are otherwise inaccessible. The Whale's journey is often tied to major story progression.

Zoom Spell: While not a physical mode of transport, the Zoom spell is an indispensable tool for fast travel. Once learned, you can instantly teleport to any city or campsite you have previously visited. This spell significantly cuts down on travel time, allowing you to quickly return to towns for supplies or to specific locations for quests.
