The Dark One & Its Origins — Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Walkthrough
The protagonist of Dragon Quest XI S is branded as "The Dark spawn" upon revealing his identity to the King, leading to a relentless pursuit by the army. This hero is believed by his companions to be The Luminary reborn, embarking on a journey to uncover his past and confront an ominous threat. The game features new characters, a detailed world, turn-based combat, and an immersive story.
The story begins with a young man participating in his village's coming-of-age ceremony, traveling to a Sacred Stone with his childhood friend. Unexpected events reveal he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero. His quest to unravel his past leads him to assemble a band of adventurers who believe in his true identity as The Luminary. Together, they journey across continents and oceans, learning about a looming threat to the world.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition reintroduces exclusive 2D dungeons from the Japanese 3DS version. These dungeons become accessible upon reaching Tinkerton for the first time. To unlock additional content within these 2D dungeons, players must locate Tockles scattered throughout the world. While some Tockles are easy to miss, none are permanently missable.
Players can choose between 3D and 2D modes, which can be switched at a Church or Goddess Statue. However, switching chapters in 2D mode will result in losing progress. Key differences between the modes include:
- Boat Docking: In 2D mode, the boat can be docked on any shoreline; in 3D, only at designated spots.
- Map Size: 2D maps are generally smaller and quicker to traverse.
- Sparkling Spots: Item collection spots consistently respawn every 15 minutes in 2D mode, but have a random respawn range in 3D.
- Travel Spells: Zoom or Chimera Wings can only be used outside in 2D mode (not in dungeons or campsites), but anywhere in 3D mode.
- Battles: 2D mode features random encounters, similar to older RPGs. In 3D mode, enemies are visible on screen and can be avoided.
- Jumping: Jumping is not possible in 2D mode.
For those seeking a greater challenge, Draconian Mode offers handicaps that can be toggled off at any church. If unsure where to go, the map provides hints for story progression. Upon receiving a new character, access the Tactics menu to manage their abilities.
