Bestiary / Monster List
Welcome, intrepid adventurers, to the comprehensive Bestiary of the original Dragon Quest (also known as Dragon Warrior in its initial NES release)! This section is your ultimate resource for identifying, strategizing against, and profiting from every monstrous encounter in the game. Whether you're aiming to conquer every foe, seeking valuable gold and experience, or simply need a tactical edge in battle, this guide has you covered for the NES, Game Boy Color, Game Boy, and mobile versions.
Unlike later entries in the series, the original Dragon Quest does not feature an in-game bestiary. Therefore, this guide serves as your essential companion, detailing monster statistics, locations, and crucial strategies to help you on your quest to defeat the Dragonlord.
Understanding Monster Encounters
In Dragon Quest, monsters appear randomly as you traverse the overworld, dungeons, and towns. Encounter rates and monster types vary significantly by region. Early areas near Tantegel Castle will feature weaker foes, while the deeper dungeons and regions closer to the Dragonlord's Castle will present significantly greater challenges. Always be prepared for battle, and don't hesitate to retreat to a town to heal and save your progress if you're feeling overwhelmed.
Key Monster Statistics Explained
- HP (Hit Points): How much damage a monster can take before being defeated.
- Attack: The monster's offensive power, contributing to the damage it deals.
- Defense: The monster's defensive power, reducing the damage it takes.
- Agility: Determines turn order in battle. Higher agility means the monster is more likely to act before you.
- Experience (EXP): Points gained upon defeating the monster, contributing to your level progression.
- Gold: Currency dropped upon defeating the monster, essential for purchasing equipment and spells.
- Item Drop: Rare items that a monster might drop. While not as prevalent as in later games, some monsters can drop valuable consumables.
Common Monsters & Strategies
Here, we break down the most frequently encountered monster types in the original Dragon Quest, providing specific advice for dealing with them, along with their vital statistics and potential rewards. Remember that item drops are rare in this game, so focus more on the EXP and Gold.

- HP: 4-5

Boss Battle: The Dragonlord
The ultimate adversary. The Dragonlord is a two-stage boss battle that will test all your skills and preparation.
Recommended Preparation for Dragonlord
- Level: Aim for at least Level 17-20. Higher levels make the fight significantly easier.
- Equipment:
- Weapon: Erdrick's Sword (mandatory for maximum damage)
- Armor: Erdrick's Armor (best defense, regenerates HP as you walk)
- Shield: Silver Shield (best available)
- Items:
- At least 5-6 Medical Herbs (for quick emergency healing)
- 1-2 Wings of the Wyvern (to escape if needed, though not during the fight)
- Spells: Ensure you have learned and have enough MP for:
- Healmore (essential for survival)
- Stopspell (crucial for the Dragonlord's second form)
- Sleep (can be useful in the first form, but less reliable)
- Radiant (if you need light in the castle, but not for the fight itself)
Dragonlord - First Form
The Dragonlord appears in his human-like form, sitting on his throne.
- HP: 100-120
- Attack: 40-50
- Defense: 35-40
- Agility: 25-30
- Strategy:
- Start by casting Sleep. While not guaranteed, if it lands, you can get several free turns of damage.
- If Sleep fails or wears off, focus on physical attacks with Erdrick's Sword.
- Keep your HP above 60-70 at all times. Use Healmore as needed.
- This form can cast Stopspell on you, preventing your healing. If this happens, rely on Medical Herbs until the effect wears off or you defeat him.
- Once defeated, he will transform.
Dragonlord - Second Form (Dragon Form)
The Dragonlord reveals his true, terrifying dragon form.
- HP: 180-200
- Attack: 60-70
- Defense: 50-60
- Agility: 30-35
- Special Attack: Breathes fire for massive damage (around 40-50 HP).
- Strategy:
- Immediately cast Stopspell on the Dragonlord. This is critical as his fire breath is devastating and can quickly end the fight. If it fails, keep trying until it lands.
- Once Stopspell is active, the Dragonlord can only use physical attacks, which are still strong but more manageable.
- Continue with physical attacks using Erdrick's Sword.
- Maintain your HP above 80-90. Use Healmore every time your HP drops significantly. Do not be stingy with MP.
- If Stopspell wears off, immediately re-cast it.
- Persevere! This is a battle of attrition. With good equipment, high HP, and consistent healing, victory will be yours.
Maximizing Your Gold & Experience
While there's no "Bestiary Completion" in the original Dragon Quest, maximizing your gold and experience is crucial for success.
- Grind in the Right Areas: As you gain levels and better equipment, venture into new areas. The monsters there will offer significantly more EXP and Gold.
- Early Game (Lvl 1-5): Tantegel Region, Garinham Region.
- Mid Game (Lvl 6-12): Kol Region, Swamp Cave, Hauksness Region.
- Late Game (Lvl 13+): Garin's Grave, Mountain Cave, Charlock Castle (especially the upper floors before the Dragonlord).
- Target Metal Slimes: While rare and difficult to hit, Metal Slimes offer a huge EXP boost. If you encounter one, prioritize trying to land a critical hit.
- Return to Town Frequently: Don't push your luck. Return to Tantegel or another town to heal and save your game after a few battles, especially in dangerous areas. This prevents losing hard-earned EXP and Gold.
- Buy Equipment Upgrades: Always prioritize buying the best weapon and armor available in each town. Better equipment means you take less damage and deal more, making grinding more efficient.
Happy hunting, and may your quest to save Alefgard be successful!
