Hearth
The Hearth is a crucial room for maintaining the morale and loyalty of your creatures. Without a proper Hearth, your creatures will become unhappy, fight amongst themselves, and eventually abandon your dungeon. A well-managed Hearth ensures your minions are well-fed, rested, and ready to defend your domain or launch devastating attacks on your enemies.
Building and Placement
- Cost: The Hearth costs 100 Gold per tile to dig out and construct.
- Size: While a minimum size of 3x3 is technically possible, this is highly inefficient. Aim for at least a 5x5 Hearth for early game, expanding to 7x7 or larger as your dungeon grows and your creature count increases. Larger Hearths allow more creatures to eat simultaneously, reducing queues and improving overall satisfaction.
- Location: Place your Hearth centrally within your dungeon, but not directly on a main thoroughfare. Creatures will frequently visit the Hearth, so ensure easy access from their Lairs and Training Rooms. Avoid placing it too close to the Dungeon Heart, as this area should be reserved for critical defenses.
- Adjacency: Consider placing your Hearth near your Hatchery. While not strictly necessary, it can slightly reduce travel time for creatures moving between eating and resting/training.
Functionality and Creature Interaction
The Hearth serves as the primary eating area for all your creatures. Impatient creatures will often complain or even fight if they have to wait too long for food. Here's how it works:
- Food Generation: Food appears automatically within the Hearth at regular intervals, provided you have a sufficient supply of Chickens from your Hatchery. Each food item can feed one creature.
- Creature Behavior: When hungry, creatures will pathfind to the nearest available food item in the Hearth. Once they've eaten, they will return to their Lairs, Training Rooms, or other assigned tasks.
- Morale Impact: A well-stocked Hearth directly contributes to high creature morale. Conversely, a lack of food or an overcrowded Hearth will quickly lead to discontent, fighting, and potential desertion.
Optimizing Your Hearth
To ensure your Hearth operates at peak efficiency, consider the following strategies:
- Adequate Size: As mentioned, never skimp on Hearth size. A cramped Hearth is a recipe for disaster. Observe your creatures' eating patterns; if you consistently see long queues, expand the room.
- Hatchery Synergy: Ensure you have a robust Hatchery producing enough Chickens to supply your Hearth. A good rule of thumb is to have at least one Hatchery for every 10-15 creatures, though this can vary based on creature type and their hunger levels.
- Door Placement: While not mandatory, placing doors on your Hearth entrances can offer a minor defensive advantage by slowing down invading heroes. However, be mindful that doors also slow down your own creatures, potentially causing queues during feeding times. Use them strategically, perhaps on less-trafficked entrances.
- Reinforcement: If you anticipate a major battle or a period of high activity, consider temporarily reinforcing your Hearth walls. While not a combat room, a collapsing Hearth during a siege can cripple your creature's morale.
- Monitoring Creature Happiness: Regularly check the happiness levels of your creatures (by picking them up or using the creature panel). If you see a consistent dip in happiness related to hunger, your Hearth or Hatchery needs attention.
Remember, a happy army is an effective army. Investing in a well-designed and maintained Hearth is an investment in the overall success of your dungeon and the subjugation of the surface world!
