Nevergrim: A Keeper's Guide to Domination

Welcome, Keeper, to Nevergrim! This level presents a unique challenge, focusing on strategic creature deployment, efficient resource management, and mastering defensive tactics against relentless hero incursions. Your primary objective is to eliminate the rival Keeper, whose Dungeon Heart lies in the far northeast. The path to victory is fraught with traps, powerful heroes, and a rival who favors a strong defensive posture.

Initial Setup and Rapid Expansion

Upon starting, your immediate priority is to establish a robust economy and foundational rooms. Efficiency in these early stages will dictate your mid-game strength.

  • Dungeon Heart Protection: Immediately begin digging a 3x3 Lair and a 3x3 Hatchery directly adjacent to your Dungeon Heart. These are essential for creature housing and food production.
  • Gold Acquisition: Prioritize gold acquisition. There are several veins of gold ore directly adjacent to your starting area. Dig these out quickly to fund your early expansion and room construction.
    • Gold Vein 1 (North): A small 2x3 vein located directly north of your Dungeon Heart. Clear this first.
    • Gold Vein 2 (East): A larger 4x4 vein to the east. Be wary of the hero patrol route that occasionally sweeps near this area. Consider placing a temporary Guard Post if you encounter early resistance.
    • Hidden Gold Cache (South-West): A 3x3 hidden gold vein can be found by digging through a 1x1 dirt block directly southwest of your Dungeon Heart, past a small patch of rock.
  • Essential Room Expansion: As soon as you have sufficient gold and space, aim for a 5x5 Training Room and a 5x5 Library. These are crucial for leveling up your creatures and researching vital spells. Place them strategically to minimize creature travel time.

Creature Recruitment and Strategic Training

Nevergrim offers a good variety of creatures. Focus on attracting a balanced force that can handle both hero incursions and the rival Keeper's defenses. Early creature choices are critical for survival.

  • Imps: Your first priority. Attract as many as possible by claiming territory. They are indispensable for digging, gold transportation, and room construction.
  • Bile Demons (Early Defense): Build a 5x5 Bridge over the lava pool to the west of your Dungeon Heart. This will attract Bile Demons, excellent for early defense due to their high health and damage output. Station them at choke points.
  • Trolls (Versatile Labor & Defense): To attract Trolls, you need to construct a Workshop. A 3x3 Workshop is sufficient initially. Trolls are incredibly versatile; they can build traps, manufacture doors, and are surprisingly effective in combat, especially when supported. Their ability to construct traps makes them invaluable for reinforcing your defenses against heroes. Aim for 3-4 Trolls once your Workshop is operational.
  • Dark Mistress (Mid-Game Powerhouse): As you expand towards the center of the map, you'll discover a prison cell containing a Dark Mistress. Break her out by digging through the surrounding dirt walls (usually 2-3 blocks thick). She is a powerful melee unit with high damage and decent health, a valuable asset for both defense and offense. Prioritize her training.
  • Warlocks (Ranged Support & Research): Once your Library is established and adequately staffed by Imps, Warlocks will start to appear. Their ranged attacks and ability to research spells (like Heal and Lightning) are indispensable for mid-to-late game engagements. Ensure your Library is at least 5x5 for optimal Warlock attraction.
  • Training Regimen: Consistently send your creatures to the Training Room. Prioritize your Bile Demons, Dark Mistress, and any Trolls you intend to use in combat to level 4 or 5 before engaging the enemy Keeper directly. High-level creatures are significantly more resilient and deal more damage.

Dealing with Hero Incursions: Fortifying Your Dungeon

Nevergrim is known for its persistent hero attacks. Expect regular patrols from Knights, Monks, and occasionally Archers from the northern and eastern entrances. Do not underestimate them; a single high-level hero can decimate an unprepared defense.

  • Early Defense Strategy:
    • Place a few Guard Posts at choke points leading into your dungeon, particularly at the northern and eastern entryways. Station your highest-level Bile Demons and Trolls here.
    • Utilize Boulder Traps and Spike Traps in narrow corridors. Boulder Traps are particularly effective against groups of heroes, knocking them back and dealing significant damage.
    • Hidden Trap Cache: You can find a hidden cache of 3 Boulder Traps in a 1x1 dirt block directly south of the central lava lake. Dig this out early to bolster your defenses.
  • Mid-Game Defensive Reinforcements:
    • Reinforce Choke Points: As your Trolls build more traps, reinforce your primary defensive lines. Consider creating a "kill corridor" with multiple layers of Spike Traps followed by a Boulder Trap, then a Guard Post.
    • Doors: Construct Wooden Doors or, ideally, Braced Doors (requires Workshop and Trolls) at key entry points. Doors slow down heroes, allowing your creatures more time to respond and your traps to reset.
    • Scavenger Traps: Place Scavenger Traps near your gold veins or treasure rooms. While not directly damaging, they can distract heroes and provide a brief window for your creatures to engage.
    • Patrol Routes: Assign a small patrol route for 2-3 Bile Demons or a Dark Mistress to cover the main corridors leading to your Dungeon Heart. This ensures a rapid response to any hero breaches.
  • Reinforcements Protocol: Always keep a few creatures (e.g., 2-3 Bile Demons or a high-level Dark Mistress) near your Dungeon Heart. These are your emergency response team. If a hero manages to breach your outer defenses and is heading for your Heart, drop these creatures directly onto the hero. Use the Heal spell if available to keep them in the fight. Do not hesitate to use Lightning on high-threat heroes.

Attacking the Rival Keeper: The Final Assault

The rival Keeper's Dungeon Heart is located in the far northeast corner of the map. They favor a defensive strategy, often utilizing Guard Posts, Lightning Traps, and a mix of high-level creatures like Horned Reapers and Warlocks.

  • Path to the Enemy:
    • Direct Route (High Risk): The most direct route is through the central cavern, which is heavily guarded by heroes and potentially the rival Keeper's own patrols. This path is quicker but requires a strong, well-healed assault force.
    • Eastern Flank (Safer, Longer): A safer, albeit longer, approach is to tunnel along the eastern edge of the map, bypassing some of the hero patrols and potentially catching the rival Keeper off guard from an unexpected direction. This allows you to establish a forward base closer to their Dungeon Heart.
  • Pre-Assault Preparations:
    • Full Health: Ensure all creatures in your attacking force are at full health. Use the Heal spell multiple times if necessary.
    • Mana Pool: Have a full mana pool. You will need it for offensive and defensive spells during the assault.
    • Scout Ahead: Send an Imp or a single low-level creature to scout the immediate area around the rival Keeper's Dungeon Heart to identify trap placements and creature positions.
  • Spell Usage During Assault:
    • Heal: Continuously cast Heal on your attacking creatures, especially your front-line tanks like Bile Demons and the Dark Mistress.
    • Lightning: Excellent for taking out individual high-level enemy creatures (e.g., Horned Reapers, Warlocks) or dealing direct damage to the rival Keeper's Dungeon Heart. Use it strategically on the most dangerous threats.
    • Possess: Consider possessing a powerful creature like the Dark Mistress to directly control her movements and target priority, especially when dealing with enemy Guard Posts or the Dungeon Heart.
  • Targeting the Dungeon Heart: Once you've breached their outer defenses and dealt with their primary combat creatures, focus all your remaining creatures on the enemy's Dungeon Heart. Ignore any remaining enemy creatures unless they pose an immediate threat to your attackers. The goal is to destroy the Heart as quickly as possible to secure victory.

Remember, Keeper, patience and strategic planning are your greatest weapons in Nevergrim. Adapt to hero incursions, build a strong economy, and unleash your forces with precision to claim ultimate victory!
