Room Placement & Efficiency

Mastering room placement is paramount for a thriving, efficient dungeon. Strategic layout minimizes travel time for your creatures, maximizes resource generation, and fortifies your defenses. Think of your dungeon as a living organism; its arteries (corridors) and organs (rooms) must function in harmony.

Core Room Adjacency

The most critical aspect of efficient room placement is minimizing creature travel time between frequently used facilities. Consider these adjacencies:

  • Lair & Hatchery: These two rooms are the absolute backbone of your dungeon. Creatures need to eat regularly, and a short walk from their Lair to the Hatchery (specifically, the Chicken pen within it) keeps them happy and productive. Place them side-by-side or with only a single corridor separating them.
  • Lair & Training Room: After eating, many creatures will head to the Training Room to level up. A direct path from the Lair to the Training Room ensures they spend less time walking and more time gaining experience.
  • Guard Post & Treasury: Your Treasury is a prime target for invading heroes. Placing Guard Posts immediately adjacent to or surrounding your Treasury creates an instant defensive perimeter. This allows your stationed guards to quickly engage any intruders attempting to pilfer your gold.
  • Workshop & Training Room: Imps and other creatures assigned to the Workshop will be crafting traps and doors. Having the Training Room nearby allows them to easily pop over for a quick training session between tasks, boosting their efficiency.

Defensive Considerations

Your dungeon's layout is your first line of defense. Plan your rooms with hero incursions in mind:

  • Chokepoints: use narrow corridors and natural dungeon formations to create chokepoints. Place Guard Posts, Traps, and even a Barracks (for quick reinforcement) at these strategic locations.
  • Treasury Protection: As mentioned, the Treasury is a high-value target. Beyond Guard Posts, consider surrounding it with less critical rooms that can absorb initial hero attacks, or even a well-placed Torture Chamber to convert captured heroes into useful units or extract information.
  • Outer Defenses: Rooms like the Barracks and Training Room can be placed closer to the dungeon's perimeter, acting as forward operating bases for your fighting creatures to quickly respond to threats.

Resource Management & Expansion

Efficient resource flow is key to sustained growth:

  • Treasury Placement: While needing protection, your Treasury should also be reasonably accessible for Imps to deposit mined gold. Avoid placing it in an overly convoluted or distant corner of the dungeon.
  • Bridge Building: When expanding across lava or water, remember that Bridges require significant Imp labor and are vulnerable. Plan your bridge placements carefully, ideally leading to new gold veins or creature portals, and consider fortifying the areas around their entry points.
  • Room Size: Don't overbuild! A 3x3 Lair is sufficient for a few creatures, but a larger 5x5 or 7x7 Lair will accommodate more. Similarly, a larger Training Room allows more creatures to train simultaneously. However, excessively large rooms consume valuable space and gold without proportional benefits. Aim for optimal sizes based on your current creature count and gold reserves.

Advanced Tips for Efficiency

  • Sacrifice Room & Temple: These rooms often generate powerful creatures or spells. Place them in a relatively secure, central location to allow easy access for your creatures to be sacrificed or to pray.
  • Torture Chamber & Prison: These rooms work in tandem. A Prison should be easily accessible from common combat areas to quickly house captured heroes, and the Torture Chamber should be nearby for efficient processing.
  • Library & Scavenger Room: While less critical for immediate combat, these rooms provide research and valuable items. Place them in a safe, interior part of your dungeon where they won't be easily disrupted by hero attacks.
  • Imp Pathways: Observe your Imps' movement patterns. If they are constantly taking long detours, consider carving new corridors or relocating a room to streamline their pathing for mining, digging, and building.

By carefully considering these placement strategies, you'll build a dungeon that not only looks formidable but functions with ruthless efficiency, ensuring your reign as the ultimate Dungeon Keeper.
