Possession Spell Mechanics

The Possession spell is one of your most potent tools as a Dungeon Keeper, offering unparalleled tactical flexibility. By casting Possession, you temporarily take direct control of a chosen creature, viewing the dungeon from its perspective and issuing direct commands. This spell is invaluable for scouting, precision combat, and even influencing creature behavior.

Activating Possession

To cast Possession, simply select the spell from your spell menu (typically bound to a hotkey, often 'P' by default, or found in the bottom-right spell panel). Then, click on the creature you wish to possess. A brief channeling animation will play, and you'll instantly switch to a first-person view from your chosen minion's eyes.

Controlling Your Minion

  • Movement: Use the standard WASD keys for movement. Your possessed creature will move at its base speed.
  • Attacking: Left-click to initiate an attack on an enemy creature or destroyable object. Some creatures have special abilities that can be activated while possessed (see "Advanced Possession Tactics").
  • Interacting: You can interact with certain dungeon elements. For example, a possessed Imp can dig walls, a Bile Demon can pick up and drop items, and a Dark Mistress can torture prisoners.
  • Exiting Possession: Press the 'Esc' key or the Possession spell hotkey again to return to your overhead dungeon view. Be aware that you cannot exit possession if your creature is actively engaged in combat or performing a critical action.

Strategic Uses of Possession

Mastering the Possession spell can turn the tide of battle and optimize your dungeon's efficiency. Here are some key strategies:

1. Precision Combat and Hero Elimination

When a critical battle looms, possessing a powerful creature allows you to micro-manage its actions, focusing attacks on high-priority targets like Hero Wizards or heavily armored Knights. This is especially effective with:

  • Horned Reapers: Their devastating melee attacks can be aimed precisely to cleave through enemy lines.
  • Dark Mistresses: use their whip attacks and area-of-effect spells to control groups of heroes.
  • Bile Demons: Their high health and powerful, albeit slow, attacks make them excellent front-line tanks under player control.

Position your possessed creature strategically to flank enemies, draw aggro, or protect weaker allies. Remember, while possessed, your creature gains a slight combat bonus, making it even more formidable.

2. Advanced Scouting and Trap Disarming

Possessing an Imp is an excellent way to scout dangerous areas without risking your entire army. Imps move quickly and can dig through walls, revealing hidden passages, enemy strongholds, and valuable gold veins or gem seams. While possessed as an Imp, you can:

  • Dig Walls: Directly click on adjacent dirt or rock walls to command the Imp to dig. This is faster and more precise than relying on AI.
  • Disarm Traps: Lead your Imp over enemy traps to trigger and disarm them. This is a sacrificial but often necessary tactic to clear a path for your main forces.

This allows you to gather crucial intelligence on enemy layouts and hero patrols before committing your main forces.

3. Influencing Creature Behavior

Sometimes, your creatures' AI doesn't quite align with your immediate needs. Possession can override this:

  • Force Training: Possess a creature and lead it directly to the Training Room to ensure it starts leveling up immediately.
  • Resource Collection: If an Imp is ignoring a pile of gold or a gem seam, possess it and manually direct it to mine the resources.
  • Targeted Torture/Imprisonment: Possess a Dark Mistress or a Bile Demon to ensure specific prisoners are taken to the Torture Chamber or Prison, rather than being left to wander.

Limitations and Considerations

  • Vulnerability: While possessed, your Keeper's Hand is inactive, meaning you cannot cast other spells, pick up creatures, or manage your dungeon directly. This leaves your dungeon vulnerable to unexpected hero incursions or internal rebellions.
  • Mana Cost: The Possession spell consumes mana continuously while active. Keep an eye on your mana reserves, especially during prolonged engagements or scouting missions.
  • Creature Morale: Repeatedly possessing and sending a creature into dangerous situations can negatively impact its morale, potentially leading to it leaving your dungeon. Use this power wisely.

The Possession spell is a high-risk, high-reward ability. Master its nuances, and you'll find yourself with a powerful advantage over your enemies and a more efficient dungeon at your command.
