Dwarf Autonomy
One of the most defining characteristics of Dwarf Fortress is its emphasis on dwarf autonomy. Unlike many simulation games where you directly control every unit, in Dwarf Fortress, your dwarves operate with a sificant degree of independence. You issue orders and set priorities, but your dwarves decide when and how to execute them based on their skills, current needs, and the overall demands of the fortress. This system creates a dynamic and emergent gameplay experience, where unexpected outcomes and unique stories arise from the dwarves' own initiative.
Your primary role is that of a manager or overseer. You ass 'labors' to your dwarves, which are specific tasks they are capable of performing, such as mining, farming, crafting, or hauling. You also set up 'work orders' for workshops and manage 'stockpiles' to organize items. However, the dwarves themselves will choose which tasks to perform based on their assed labors, their current mood, and the proximity of the required resources or workshops. For instance, a dwarf with the mining labor assed might choose to mine if they are not currently occupied with a more pressing need, like eating or sleeping.
This autonomy means that you cannot force a dwarf to perform a specific task at a specific moment. Instead, you influence their behavior through the labor system, work orders, and the overall organization of your fortress. Understanding your dwarves' needs – for food, drink, sleep, social interaction, and safety – is crucial for keeping them productive and preventing negative events like tantrums or cave-ins caused by stressed dwarves. While it can be challenging to adapt to this indirect control, it is precisely this system that gives Dwarf Fortress its unique depth and replayability, as each dwarf's independent actions contribute to the unfolding narrative of your fortress.
