Stairways
Stairways are fundamental to vertical navigation within your fortress, allowing dwarves to move between different levels of your underground complex. Proper placement and construction of stairways are crucial for efficient movement, preventing bottlenecks, and ensuring access to all areas of your expanding stronghold.
In Dwarf Fortress, stairways are constructed by desating an area for digging stairs. This is done through the 'Desations' menu. Once desated, dwarves will excavate the area, creating a traversable stairway. There are two primary types: single stairs, which occupy a 1x1 tile, and multi-tile stairs, which can be wider and allow for more simultaneous passage.
Desating Stairways:
- Access Menu: Press 'd' for Desations.
- Select Stair Type: Choose either 'Dig stairs' (for single tile stairs) or 'Dig up/down stairs' (for multi-tile stairs).
- Mark Area: Use the cursor to mark the area where you want the stairs to be dug.
- Confirmation: Press Enter to confirm the desation. Dwarves with the 'Mining' labor will then proceed to excavate the stairs.
Placement Considerations:
- Connectivity: Ensure stairways connect logically between levels, providing direct access to workshops, living quarters, and resource areas.
- Traffic Flow: Place stairways in areas that minimize travel time and avoid creating choke points, especially in high-traffic zones like dining halls or workshops.
- Defense: Consider defensive implications. Stairways can be points of entry for enemies, so plan their placement accordingly, potentially incorporating them into trap dess or defensible areas.
- Material: While stairs are dug, the surrounding walls and floors can be constructed from various materials.
Single tile stairs (dig stairs) are efficient for smaller passages, while wider stairs can improve traffic flow in busy areas. It's often beneficial to have multiple stairways connecting major levels to prevent congestion. Remember that dwarves will automatically use desated stairways to move between floors.
Properly implemented stairways are essential for the efficient functioning of your fortress. They enable your dwarves to perform their tasks without unnecessary delays, contributing to overall productivity and the smooth operation of your underground civilization.
