Understanding Your Dwarves: The Heart of the Fortress

Dwarves are the central figures in Dwarf Fortress. They are not just units to command but complex individuals with needs, moods, skills, and relationships. Understanding your dwarves is key to building a successful and happy fortress.

Each dwarf has a unique set of characteristics. When you embark, you'll have a small group of dwarves, each with assed labors (professions). These labors determine what tasks they are capable of performing, such as mining, carpentry, brewing, or combat. You can view and adjust these labors by pressing 'y' to open the unit screen, selecting a dwarf, and navigating to the 'Labor' tab.

Dwarves also have skills that improve with practice. A dwarf who mines frequently will become a better miner, producing higher quality results and working faster. Similarly, a dwarf who crafts items will improve their crafting skills.

Beyond their work, dwarves have personal needs and emotions. They require food, drink, and sleep. If their needs are not met, or if they experience traumatic events, their moods can deteriorate. A dwarf in a bad mood might become withdrawn, lash out at others, or even go berserk, causing chaos in the fortress.

Conversely, happy dwarves are productive dwarves. Providing them with comfortable living quarters, good food and drink, and opportunities for recreation can lead to positive moods, increased productivity, and even the creation of legendary crafts. You can check a dwarf's current mood and needs by selecting them and viewing their status information.

It's important to remember that certain labors are mutually exclusive. For example, a dwarf cannot be both a miner and a woodcutter simultaneously. You'll need to carefully manage these assments to ensure your dwarves can perform the tasks required for your fortress's survival and growth.
