Adventure Mode: Character Creation and Progression
Adventure Mode in Dwarf Fortress offers a starkly different experience from Fortress Mode, focusing on a single playable character in the procedurally generated world. To begin, select "Adventure Mode" from the main menu. You'll then be presented with a character creation screen. Here, you'll choose your race (Dwarf, Human, Elf, or Goblin) and then embark on a detailed customization process. This involves selecting your starting skills, which are crucial for survival and progression. Think about what kind of adventurer you want to be: a skilled warrior, a cunning rogue, a wise scholar, or a master craftsman. Your initial skill choices will heavily influence your early game experience.
After character creation, you'll be dropped into the world. Your immediate goal is survival. Look for basic resources like food and water. Foraging for berries, hunting small animals, and finding streams are essential early tasks. Your character's skills will determine how effectively you can perform these actions. For instance, a character with high 'Foraging' will find more food, while one with high 'Hunting' will be more successful at taking down prey. As you explore, you'll encounter various settlements and individuals. Interacting with them can lead to quests, trade opportunities, or even conflict.
Progression in Adventure Mode is organic. You gain experience and improve skills by performing actions related to them. Swinging a sword increases your 'Swordsmanship', picking locks improves your 'Lockpicking', and so on. There's no traditional leveling system; your character becomes more capable through repeated use of their abilities. You can also find or purchase better equipment, such as weapons, armor, and tools, which will further enhance your effectiveness. Keep an eye out for unique artifacts and legendary items scattered throughout the world; these can dramatically alter your character's power and potential.
