Embarking

Embarking is the foundational act of beginning your Dwarf Fortress adventure. It's the process of selecting a suitable location on your generated world map, outfitting your initial group of dwarves with supplies and skills, and sending them off to establish their new home.

The embark process is a critical juncture that can sificantly influence the early game. A well-chosen embark site can provide essential resources, natural defenses, and a stable environment for your dwarves to thrive. Conversely, a poor choice can lead to immediate hardship, resource scarcity, and constant threats.

The embark process typically involves several steps:

  1. World Generation: Before you can embark, you must first generate a world. This process creates the unique landscape, history, and civilizations that will populate your game.
  2. Site Selection: Once a world is generated, you'll navigate its map to find a suitable location. This involves examining biomes, terrain features, water sources, and potential dangers. The game provides tools to help you find locations that meet certain criteria.
  3. Outfitting: You'll then equip your starting party of dwarves. This includes choosing their skills, their starting equipment (tools, weapons, armor), and essential supplies like food, drink, and seeds.
  4. Embarking: After finalizing your preparations, you confirm your choices, and your dwarves are transported to the selected site, ready to begin the arduous task of building their fortress.

For new players, the game offers a tutorial mode that automates much of the embark process, guiding you through the initial steps and providing a pre-selected site. This is an excellent way to get a feel for the game without the pressure of making critical early decisions.

Alternatively, you can choose to 'Skip tutorial' and embark manually. This allows for greater control and customization. When selecting a site, look for areas with abundant trees, a nearby river, and calm surroundings. Avoid sites with known aquifers or in evil biomes until you gain more experience.

The 'Prepare for the journey carefully' option allows for deep customization of your starting dwarves and their gear, while 'Play Now!' offers a default, balanced starting setup. Mastering the embark process is key to a successful and enjoyable Dwarf Fortress experience.
