World Generation Settings

The process of generating a new world in Dwarf Fortress is a crucial first step that shapes the entire gameplay experience. The settings you choose during this phase dictate the size, complexity, and characteristics of the world your fortress will inhabit, influencing everything from resource availability to the types of civilizations and creatures you'll encounter.

For your initial forays into Dwarf Fortress, it's highly recommended to use a set of balanced world generation settings. These settings are desed to provide a rich and interesting world without being overwhelmingly complex, allowing new players to focus on learning the core mechanics of fortress management. The goal is to create a world that is engaging but not immediately punishing.

Here are suggested settings for your first world generation:

  • World map size: Medium. This provides a good balance between exploration potential and manageable scope.
  • History length: 100 years. This duration allows for a substantial amount of historical events and civilization development without making the generation process excessively long.
  • Number of Civilizations: Medium. A moderate number of civilizations ensures interaction and potential conflict or trade without overwhelming the map.
  • Number of Sites: Medium. This setting influences the density of towns, ruins, and other points of interest, providing a good level of exploration opportunities.
  • Number of Beasts: Low. Reducing the number of dangerous creatures in the world can sificantly lower the early-game threat level.
  • Natural Savagery: Very Low. This setting minimizes the aggression of wild animals and the general hostility of the environment, making exploration and initial settlement safer.
  • Mineral Occurrence: Everywhere. Ensuring minerals are abundant makes resource gathering less of a bottleneck for early fortress development.

After configuring these settings, initiate the world generation. It's important to let the generation process complete fully, as stopping it prematurely can limit the availability of materials for embark and trade. Once the world is generated, you'll be prompted to choose a game type, where you should select 'Fortress' mode. The game will then simulate a short period of world activity before offering you the tutorial or the option to embark.
