Military Training and Organization
Establishing a robust military in Dwarf Fortress is crucial for defending your fortress from goblin sieges, rampaging beasts, and other subterranean threats. This section will guide you through the process of creating, equipping, and training your dwarven military to be an effective fighting force.
Initial Setup: The Barracks and Training Grounds
Before you can even think about sending dwarves into battle, you need a dedicated space for them to train and store their gear. A well-designed barracks is key to efficient military operations.
- Designated Barracks: Use the
q(query) menu, thenr(room) to designate a room as a Barracks. This room should ideally be at least 3x3 tiles to accommodate training and weapon racks. - Weapon Racks and Armor Stands: Within your designated Barracks, build
Weapon Racks(b-f-w) andArmor Stands(b-f-a). These are essential for dwarves to store their assigned equipment and for training. Ensure you have enough for each military dwarf. - Training Weapons: While not strictly necessary for basic training, providing wooden training weapons (crafted at a Carpenter's Workshop from logs) can prevent accidental injuries during early sparring sessions. Once dwarves gain some skill, they can transition to real weapons.
- Archery Range (Optional but Recommended): For ranged units, designate an
Archery Range(q-r) in an open area, preferably with a long sightline. BuildArchery Targets(b-f-t) within it. This allows archers to practice their marksmanship without engaging in melee.
Forming Squads and Assigning Dwarves
The military interface (m) is your command center for all things military. This is where you'll create squads, assign dwarves, and manage their schedules.
- Access the Military Screen: Press
mto open the military interface. - Create a New Squad: Press
cto create a new squad. You can name it something descriptive, like "Hammerers" or "Crossbowmen." - Assign Dwarves to Squads: Select your newly created squad, then press
ato assign dwarves. Prioritize dwarves with high attributes like Strength, Agility, and Endurance for melee roles, and Agility and Spatial Sense for ranged roles. Consider their existing skills; a dwarf with some Axe skill will make a better Axedwarf than a completely unskilled one. - Set Squad Roles: Within the squad menu, you can set the primary role for each dwarf (e.g., Axedwarf, Speardwarf, Marksdwarf). This influences their training and equipment preferences.
Equipment Management: Arming Your Troops
Proper equipment is paramount for survival. Your military dwarves need weapons, armor, and shields.
- Access Equipment Screen: From the military screen (
m), select a squad and presseto access their equipment screen. - Assign Uniforms:
- Create a New Uniform: Press
cto create a new uniform. You can name it (e.g., "Heavy Infantry Uniform"). - Add Items to Uniform: Press
ato add items. Select specific items likeCopper Breastplate,Iron Greaves,Steel Helm,Leather Shield, and a weapon appropriate for their role (e.g.,Iron Battle Axefor an Axedwarf). - Material Preference: You can specify material preferences (e.g., "Any Metal" or "Steel"). This is crucial for ensuring dwarves pick up the best available gear.
- Assign Uniform to Squad: Once the uniform is created, assign it to your squad. Dwarves will then automatically seek out the specified equipment from your stockpiles and store it in their assigned Barracks' weapon racks and armor stands.
- Create a New Uniform: Press
- Ammunition for Ranged Units: For Marksdwarves, ensure you have a steady supply of bolts (e.g.,
Bone Bolts,Copper Bolts). Designate a stockpile for ammunition near your Archery Range or Barracks.
Training Schedules and Routines
Consistent training is how your dwarves develop their combat skills and become legendary warriors.
- Access Schedule Screen: From the military screen (
m), select a squad and presssto access their schedule. - Set Training Frequency:
- Active Training: Assign a high percentage (e.g., 75-100%) to "Train" for most months. This will have dwarves actively sparring and using their weapons.
- Individual Combat Drills: This option (
i) allows dwarves to practice individually, which is good for skill gain but less effective for group combat experience. - Squad Training: This option (
s) is ideal for improving combat skills and developing teamwork. Dwarves will spar against each other.
- Stationing and Patrols:
- Station Orders: Use
t(Tasks) thens(Station) to set a specific location for a squad to stand guard. This is useful for chokepoints or important areas. - Patrol Routes: Use
t(Tasks) thenp(Patrol) to define a series of waypoints for a squad to patrol. This helps cover larger areas and keeps dwarves active.
- Station Orders: Use
- Rest and Recovery: Don't overtrain your dwarves. Ensure they have some downtime in their schedule to eat, drink, and sleep, preventing unhappiness and exhaustion. A few months of "No Orders" or "Individual Combat Drills" can be beneficial.
Advanced Military Strategies
- Multiple Squads: Create specialized squads. For example, a front-line melee squad, a ranged support squad, and a dedicated "Hammerer" squad for dealing with particularly tough threats.
- Fortification Design: Integrate your military into your fortress design. Chokepoints, drawbridges, and defensive structures like arrow slits (built from a Mason's Workshop) can significantly enhance your military's effectiveness.
- Medical Facilities: Establish a well-stocked Hospital (designated with
q-r) and assign a Chief Medical Dwarf. Injured soldiers will need prompt medical attention to recover and return to duty. - Combat Reports: Regularly review combat reports (
rin the main menu) to understand what went well and what didn't. This helps you refine your strategies and equipment choices.
