Side Quests & Activities
In Dwarf Fortress, "winning" is a relative term, and the true depth of the game lies in player-driven side quests and ambitious megaprojects that go far beyond basic survival. Once your fortress has secured a reliable source of plump helmets and a basic militia, you should transition into these high-level activities to truly test your engineering skills and the limits of the game's simulation. These pursuits transform a mere settlement into a legendary seat of power, providing goals that can span decades of in-game time.
Engineering & Industry Megaprojects
- Magma-Powered Industry: Pump liquid magma from the deep cavern layers up to your forge level using a massive pump stack or a complex piston system. This eliminates the need for fuel, allowing for infinite smelting of iron, steel, and adamantine.
- The Obsidian Factory: Construct a controlled chamber where pressurized water and magma meet to "cast" obsidian blocks. This can be used to build seamless, jet-black towers or to trap invading forces in solid stone.
- Elaborate Trap Corridors: Move beyond simple weapon traps. Design "Drowning Chambers" using floodgates and pressure plates, or "Dwarven Atom Smashers" that use raising bridges to delete entire squads of goblins and their equipment from existence.
Biological & Cultural Pursuits
- Exotic Beast Taming: Capture dangerous wildlife such as Giant Cave Spiders, Jabberers, or even Dragons. Assign a dedicated Animal Trainer to turn these monsters into war-trained pets to defend your gatehouse.
- Epic Art Projects: Commission a Great Library or a Museum. Command your engravers to smooth and detail every square inch of your fortress, recording the history of your world in the stone walls, or craft a legendary artifact made of "slade" or "native gold."
- The Institutionalized Military: Instead of a part-time militia, create a permanent warrior caste housed in lavish barracks, equipped entirely in masterwork steel, and trained to "Legendary" status in wrestling and weapon skills.
High-Risk Exploration
- Breaching the Underworld: If your fortress is wealthy and powerful enough, mine deep into the "Hollow Candy" (Adamantine) veins to discover the Hidden Fun Stuff. This ultimate "side quest" pits your dwarves against the infinite legions of the underworld in a final test of martial and tactical prowess.
- Cavern Colonization: Move your entire civilian population into the first or second cavern layer, building a city suspended over the subterranean lakes, fueled by giant mushrooms and protected by walls of nether-cap wood.
