Goalkeeper Rush & Positioning

The goalkeeper's actions are critical in EA Sports FC 27, especially when dealing with through balls, one-on-one situations, and crosses. Mastering the goalkeeper rush and understanding proper positioning can be the difference between conceding a goal and making a match-saving stop. The goalkeeper rush is typically activated by double-tapping the shoot button (Circle/B) or by pressing L1/LB and then the shoot button. This command makes your goalkeeper sprint out of their goal line to close down the angle on an attacker.

Using the goalkeeper rush effectively requires good timing and judgment. It is most useful when an opponent has played a through ball that bypasses your defensive line, leaving their attacker one-on-one with your keeper. By rushing out, you reduce the space and time the attacker has to shoot, forcing them to make a decision quickly. However, a mistimed rush can leave your goal completely open, allowing the attacker to easily chip or dribble around your advancing keeper.

Beyond rushing, the goalkeeper's standard positioning is also crucial. When not actively rushing, the goalkeeper should generally be positioned slightly off their line, ready to react to shots or through balls. The AI often handles this positioning automatically, but manual control can be beneficial in specific situations. For example, if an opponent is attempting a chip shot, you might want to manually move your goalkeeper back slightly to increase the chance of saving it.

A common mistake is to overuse the goalkeeper rush. This can lead to numerous goals conceded from simple through balls that your defenders could have dealt with. It's important to assess the situation: is there a defender who can intercept the pass? Is the attacker in a position where they can easily round your keeper? If the answer to either of these is yes, then a rush might be warranted. However, if your defenders are closing down the attacker or if the attacker is far from goal, it's often better to let your AI-controlled keeper handle the situation or to manually position them.

For crosses, the goalkeeper's decision to come out or stay on their line is also influenced by the cross's trajectory and the presence of attacking players. While the AI makes these decisions, understanding the principles can help you anticipate your keeper's actions. For instance, a high, looping cross towards the back post might tempt the keeper to come out, while a low, driven cross into the six-yard box might see them stay put. Mastering these aspects of goalkeeper play will sificantly bolster your defensive capabilities, especially when facing potent attacks in modes like Ultimate Team.
