Equip Load
Equip Load is a fundamental game mechanic in Elden Ring that dictates your movement speed, dodge roll effectiveness, and overall survivability. Managing your Equip Load is crucial for navigating combat encounters efficiently and avoiding being a slow, vulnerable target. Understanding its impact can significantly improve your combat performance.
Your Equip Load is determined by the total weight of all the equipment you have equipped, including weapons, armor, talismans, and shields. This weight is then compared to your character's maximum Equip Load, which is influenced by your Endurance stat. The game categorizes your Equip Load into three tiers: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Each tier has distinct effects on your character's movement and evasion:
- Light Load (Under 30% Equip Load): This is the ideal state for most players. You benefit from the fastest dodge roll animation, offering the most invincibility frames and the longest distance covered. This allows for quick repositioning and effective evasion of enemy attacks.
- Medium Load (30% to 70% Equip Load): This is the standard loadout for many players. Your dodge roll is still effective, but it's slower and covers less distance than a Light Load roll. You have slightly fewer invincibility frames, making timing more critical.
- Heavy Load (70% to 100% Equip Load): This tier significantly hinders your mobility. Your dodge roll becomes a slow, lumbering "fat roll" with very few invincibility frames and a short distance. This makes evading attacks incredibly difficult and leaves you highly vulnerable.
- Overloaded (Over 100% Equip Load): If your Equip Load exceeds 100%, you will be unable to sprint or dodge roll effectively, making combat nearly impossible.
To manage your Equip Load effectively:
- Invest in Endurance: The Endurance stat directly increases your maximum Equip Load. Prioritizing this stat is essential if you wish to wear heavier armor or wield heavier weapons while maintaining a favorable roll.
- Choose Armor Wisely: Heavier armor generally offers better damage negation and poise but significantly increases your Equip Load. Balance protection with mobility.
- Consider Weapon and Shield Weight: Some of the most powerful weapons and shields are also the heaviest. Be mindful of their contribution to your total weight.
- Use Talismans: Talismans like the Great-Jar's Arsenal and Arsenal Charm increase your maximum Equip Load, allowing you to equip more gear without sacrificing mobility.
The goal is to stay within the Light or Medium Load categories to ensure you can effectively evade attacks. A Heavy Load will drastically reduce your combat effectiveness and is generally not recommended unless you have a specific build strategy that relies on tanking hits or has other means of evasion.
