Great Runes & Remembrance
In the vast and perilous Lands Between, Great Runes are the shattered remnants of the Elden Ring, bestowed upon demigods. Each Great Rune grants a powerful, unique buff when equipped and activated. Remembrances, on the other hand, are echoes of the most formidable foes you've vanquished, offering a choice between unique armaments or potent spells.
Acquiring Great Runes
There are a total of seven Great Runes to be found, each dropped by a specific Shardbearer boss. To activate their power, you must first restore them at their respective Divine Towers.
- Godrick's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Godrick the Grafted at Stormveil Castle.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of Limgrave. Access this tower by crossing the Great Bridge east of Stormveil Castle, then navigating the path to the tower's entrance.
- Effect: Greatly raises all attributes (STR, DEX, INT, FAI, ARC).
- Radahn's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Starscourage Radahn at Redmane Castle in Caelid, after initiating the Radahn Festival.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of Caelid. This tower is located in Dragonbarrow, accessible by riding north from the Dragonbarrow West Site of Grace and carefully platforming up the tower's exterior.
- Effect: Greatly raises maximum HP, FP, and Stamina.
- Rennala's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon at the Academy of Raya Lucarian.
- Restoration: This Great Rune is unique; it does not require restoration at a Divine Tower. Its power is active immediately upon acquisition.
- Effect: Grants access to the Rebirth feature, allowing you to respec your character's stats at Rennala.
- Morgott's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Morgott, the Omen King at the base of the Erdtree in Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of East Altus. This tower is located east of the Forbidden Lands, accessible after defeating Morgott and gaining access to the Mountaintops of the Giants path.
- Effect: Greatly raises maximum HP.
- Malenia's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Accessing this area requires finding both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of East Altus. This is the same tower used for Morgott's Great Rune.
- Effect: Attacks recover HP, but HP recovery is reduced when taking damage.
- Mohg's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Mohgwyn Palace. Access to Mohgwyn Palace can be gained via a portal in the Consecrated Snowfield or through White Mask Varre's questline.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of East Altus. This is the same tower used for Morgott's and Malenia's Great Runes.
- Effect: Grants a blessing of blood to spirit summons, increasing their attack power.
- Rycard's Great Rune:
- Source: Defeat Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy at Volcano Manor.
- Restoration: Divine Tower of West Altus. This tower is located directly west of the Shaded Castle in the Altus Plateau.
- Effect: Restores HP upon defeating enemies.
Activating Great Runes
Once a Great Rune is restored at its Divine Tower, you must equip it at a Site of Grace under the "Great Runes" menu. To activate its power, you need to consume a Rune Arc. Rune Arcs are consumable items found throughout the world, dropped by certain enemies, or purchased from merchants. The Great Rune's effect will persist until you die, at which point you'll need to consume another Rune Arc to reactivate it.
Remembrances and Their Rewards
Remembrances are special items dropped by certain major bosses. Upon acquiring a Remembrance, you have two options:
- Use it: Consume the Remembrance directly from your inventory to gain a large amount of Runes. This is generally not recommended as the unique rewards are far more valuable.
- Exchange it: Take the Remembrance to Enia at the Roundtable Hold. She will offer you a choice between two unique boss weapons, spells, or talismans associated with the defeated boss.
Duplicating Remembrances
If you wish to obtain both rewards from a single Remembrance, or if you accidentally consumed one, you can duplicate them at a Walking Mausoleum. There are several Walking Mausoleums scattered across the Lands Between, identifiable by their massive, walking stone structures. Each Walking Mausoleum can only duplicate one Remembrance, and some are specific to Remembrances from "demigod" bosses (those who drop Great Runes).
Steps to Duplicate a Remembrance:
- Locate a Walking Mausoleum.
- Attack the white skull-like barnacles on its feet until it kneels down. Be cautious, as some Mausoleums have archers on top.
- Enter the Mausoleum and interact with the altar inside.
- Select the Remembrance you wish to duplicate.
Remember to carefully consider your build and playstyle when choosing Remembrance rewards, as they often provide powerful and unique options that can significantly impact your journey through the Lands Between.
