Medium Armor
Medium armor in Elden Ring offers a balanced approach to defense, providing a solid layer of protection without the heavy encumbrance of Great or Heavy armor. This allows for a more versatile playstyle, enabling players to maintain a medium roll while still benefiting from significant damage reduction.
The primary advantage of medium armor is its ability to keep your equip load within the medium roll threshold (under 70% of your maximum equip load). A medium roll offers a good balance of distance covered and recovery time, allowing you to evade attacks effectively while still being able to reposition quickly. Heavy armor, while offering superior protection, often forces a slow, cumbersome heavy roll, making dodging much more challenging.
Medium armor sets are diverse, with many offering unique appearances and varying defensive stats. They typically provide a good mix of physical damage negation, alongside resistances to elemental damage like Fire, Lightning, Magic, and Holy. Poise is also a factor, with medium armor generally offering more poise than light armor, helping you resist enemy stagger.
Here are some notable medium armor sets and where to find them:
- Banished Knight Set: A strong early-to-mid-game set with good physical defense and poise. Pieces can be farmed from Banished Knights found in various locations, most notably Stormveil Castle and Castle Sol.
- Carian Knight Set: Offers excellent magic damage negation and decent physical defense. Found in the Raya Lucaria Academy, often near the Debate Parlor.
- Knight Set: A classic, well-rounded set with solid all-around defenses. Can be purchased from the Nomadic Merchant near the Castle Morne Rampart in the Weeping Peninsula.
- Scaled Set: A very popular set known for its excellent balance of physical defense, elemental resistances, and poise, all while maintaining a medium equip load. Obtained by defeating the Volcano Manor boss, Godrick the Grafted, and then purchasing the set from the Twin Maiden Husks after he's defeated. (Correction: The Scaled Set is obtained from Diallos's questline after he becomes a servant at the Volcano Manor.)
- Lionel's Set: While technically heavy, some pieces can be mixed and matched to create a medium armor build with high poise. Found in Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Raging Wolf Set: A stylish set with good resistances, obtained through the Volcano Manor assassination questline.
When choosing medium armor, consider the following:
- Equip Load: Always monitor your equip load. Aim to stay below 70% for a medium roll. If you're struggling to maintain this, you may need to invest points into Endurance or equip talismans that increase your equip load, such as the Great-Jar's Arsenal.
- Defensive Stats: Compare the physical and elemental damage negation of different pieces. Prioritize resistances relevant to the area you are exploring or the boss you are fighting.
- Poise: Higher poise allows you to withstand enemy attacks without being staggered, giving you more opportunities to counter-attack.
Medium armor is ideal for players who want a good balance of offense and defense. It allows for aggressive play without sacrificing too much survivability, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of builds and playstyles. Experiment with different pieces to find a combination that best suits your needs and aesthetic preferences.
