Somber Smithing Stones — Elden Ring Guide

Somber Smithing Stones are rare and valuable upgrade materials in Elden Ring, used exclusively to enhance the power of unique Somber Stone weapons. These weapons, often boss weapons or special armaments, can only be upgraded using these stones, making them distinct from regular weapons that use Smithing Stones. Mastering their acquisition is key to unlocking the full potential of your favorite unique armaments.

Somber Smithing Stones come in ten tiers, from Somber Smithing Stone [1] up to Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. Each tier is required for progressively higher upgrade levels. For instance, Somber Smithing Stone [1] and [2] are used for the initial upgrades, while higher-tier stones like Somber Smithing Stone [7] and [8] are needed for the later stages. The final upgrade, to +10, requires a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

The distribution of Somber Smithing Stones is more concentrated than regular Smithing Stones. They are often found in specific locations, guarded by challenging enemies or bosses, or given as rewards for completing certain quests. Early in the game, you'll find lower-tier stones. For example, Somber Smithing Stone [1] and [2] can be found in various caves and tunnels in Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula. Defeating certain bosses, like the Erdtree Burial Watchdog or the Cemetery Shade, can also yield these stones.

As you progress into later regions like Liurnia of the Lakes, Caelid, and Altus Plateau, you'll encounter higher-tier Somber Smithing Stones. The Raya Lucaria Academy, for example, contains several higher-tier stones. The Volcano Manor region and the Mountaintops of the Giants are prime locations for finding Somber Smithing Stones [5] through [8].

The most coveted and rarest are the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones. These are extremely limited, with only a handful available per playthrough. They are typically found in the most challenging late-game areas, such as Crumbling Farum Azula and the Mountaintops of the Giants, often guarded by powerful dragon enemies or found in hidden chests. Some can also be purchased from Twin Maiden Husks after defeating certain bosses, though this is also limited.

To upgrade your Somber Stone weapons, you will need to visit Smithing Master Hewg at the Roundtable Hold. He is the only blacksmith capable of upgrading these unique weapons. Simply bring him your Somber Stone weapon and the appropriate Somber Smithing Stones, and he will perform the upgrade.

Here is a general guide to where you can find Somber Smithing Stones:

Stone Tier Typical Location Notes
Somber Smithing Stone [1]-[2] Caves, Tunnels (Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula) Dropped by specific enemies, found in chests.
Somber Smithing Stone [3]-[4] Caves, Dungeons (Liurnia, Caelid) Often guarded by bosses or mini-bosses.

Somber Smithing Stone [7]-[8] Mountaintops of the Giants, Crumbling Farum Azula Scarce, often in difficult areas.
Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone Late-game areas (Mountaintops, Farum Azula) Extremely rare, only a few per playthrough.
