Dungeon & Catacomb Exploration — Elden Ring Guide
The Lands Between is riddled with hidden dungeons, catacombs, and caves, each offering unique challenges, valuable loot, and often a boss encounter. These optional areas are crucial for acquiring powerful weapons, spells, talismans, and upgrade materials that can significantly bolster your character's strength and survivability.
Catacombs are typically found in graveyards and are characterized by their maze-like layouts, trap-filled corridors, and undead enemies. Dungeons and caves can vary greatly in theme and difficulty, ranging from small caves with a single miniboss to sprawling underground complexes with multiple levels and unique mechanics.
General Strategies for Dungeon Exploration:
- Light the way: Many dungeons are dark. Use torches or spells to illuminate your path.
- Beware of traps: Pressure plates, hidden enemies, poison gas, and falling debris are common. Observe your surroundings carefully.
- Listen for cues: Enemies often make distinct sounds. Pay attention to audio cues to anticipate ambushes.
- Conserve resources: Don't waste your Flasks on minor encounters. Save them for tougher enemies and bosses.
- Use Spirit Ashes: Spirit Ashes can be invaluable for drawing aggro from multiple enemies or distracting a boss while you attack.
- Explore thoroughly: Look for hidden passages, breakable walls, and illusory floors. Many valuable items are tucked away in obscure corners.
- Collect all items: Always pick up crafting materials, upgrade stones, and any unique items you find.
Types of Dungeons:
- Catacombs: Often contain Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort for upgrading Spirit Ashes, as well as unique weapons and spells. Bosses are typically Erdtree Burial Watchdogs, Putrid Avatars, or Skeletons.
- Caves: Usually contain Smithing Stones and can house valuable weapons, armor, or crafting materials. Bosses are often Beasts (like the Demi-Human Chief) or Golems.
- Tunnels: Similar to caves, often found in rocky areas and contain valuable ores and sometimes unique items.
- Ruins: While not always dungeons, ruins often hide entrances to caves or catacombs, or contain valuable loot in their own right.
Notable Dungeon Rewards:
- Ashes of War: Many powerful Ashes of War are found in these optional areas.
- Unique Weapons: Some of the most powerful and interesting weapons in the game are hidden within dungeons.
- Talismans: Essential passive buffs that can greatly enhance your build.
- Sorceries and Incantations: Spellcasters will find many new spells to add to their repertoire.
- Upgrade Materials: Smithing Stones, Grave Glovewort, and Ghost Glovewort are vital for improving your gear.
Don't underestimate the importance of these smaller, often overlooked areas. They are a cornerstone of Elden Ring's progression system, providing the necessary resources and power-ups to tackle the main story bosses. Make it a habit to clear out any catacombs or caves you discover; the rewards are almost always worth the effort.
