Docking & Undocking
The process of docking and undocking at starports and outposts is a fundamental skill that every Elite Dangerous pilot must master. To initiate docking, you must first request permission via the Contacts panel within your ship's system. Once granted, the station's traffic control will ass you a specific landing pad number. It is then your responsibility to carefully maneuver your ship towards this assed pad. Precision is key; you will need to use your thrusters to al your vessel with the pad, ensuring it is centered and oriented correctly before deploying your landing gear. The docking computer can automate this process, providing a helpful crutch for new pilots, but learning manual docking is highly recommended for greater control and efficiency, especially in busy stations or when dealing with unexpected events.
Undocking follows a similar procedure in reverse. After undocking, you will typically be given a brief window to ascend vertically before being cleared to engage your Frame Shift Drive. Paying attention to the station's traffic control instructions is paramount to avoid collisions with other ships or station structures, which can result in fines or even ship destruction. Understanding the nuances of your ship's thrusters for fine adjustments, managing your speed, and maintaining situational awareness are all critical components of successful docking and undocking. Practicing these maneuvers in the Training mode, particularly the 'Combat Training - Skirmish' scenario which often involves navigating around stations, can build confidence and proficiency before attempting them in the live galaxy.
