Mastering 'Flight Assist Off' (FAO) is a pivotal step in transitioning from basic piloting to advanced flight and combat proficiency in Elite Dangerous. When Flight Assist is disabled, your ship no longer automatically stabilizes or als with your direction of travel. This grants you complete freedom to vector your ship independently, allowing for highly precise and complex maneuvers that are impossible with Flight Assist engaged. Learning to effectively utilize your thrusters – vertical, lateral, and forward/backward – becomes paramount. This enables techniques such as 'reverse thrusting' to rapidly decelerate while maintaining forward aim, or 'strafe and shoot' maneuvers, where you can move your ship sideways while keeping your nose pointed at the target, a critical tactic in dogfighting.

Effective power management is another cornerstone of advanced combat. By allocating pips (power units) to your ship's Engines, Weapons, and Systems (shields and utilities) via the Power Distributor, you can dynamically adjust your ship's performance. Prioritizing Engines allows for faster acceleration and maneuverability, while focusing on Weapons ensures maximum firepower. Allocating pips to Systems enhances shield strength and recharge rates, as well as the performance of utility modules. Understanding how to quickly and effectively shift these pips based on the tactical situation is crucial. Advanced pilots also learn to manage their ship's inertia and momentum, using controlled bursts of thrusters and judicious use of FAO to execute tight turns, evade incoming fire, and maintain optimal firing solutions.
