Spirit Skill Trees / Progression
Beyond simply acquiring new Spirits, mastering their unique abilities and enhancing their power is crucial for surviving the Blight. Ender Lilies features a robust Spirit progression system that allows you to tailor your combat style and overcome increasingly difficult challenges. This section will guide you through optimizing your Spirit loadouts and maximizing their potential.
Spirit Upgrades: Blight & Ancient Souls
Each Spirit in Lily's arsenal can be upgraded, significantly boosting their damage output and, in some cases, altering their attack patterns or adding new properties. Upgrades are performed at any Respite (save point) and require specific materials:
- Blight Fragments: These are the most common upgrade material, dropped by most enemies throughout the game. They are used for the initial tiers of Spirit upgrades. You'll find them in abundance, but don't be complacent; higher-tier upgrades demand a substantial quantity.
- Ancient Souls: Far rarer than Blight Fragments, Ancient Souls are essential for the final, most powerful upgrades for each Spirit. These are typically found in hidden chests, as rewards for defeating mini-bosses, or in specific, often challenging, areas. Prioritize collecting these for your most-used Spirits.
Upgrade Strategy:
- Focus on your Mainstays: Identify the Spirits you rely on most heavily for both offense and utility. The White Priestess, for instance, is an early-game staple for many players due to her reliable ranged attack. Prioritize upgrading these core Spirits first.
- Balanced Progression: While focusing on a few key Spirits is good, avoid neglecting others entirely. Some Spirits, even if not your primary damage dealers, offer invaluable utility (e.g., the Headless Defender's guard, the Umbral Knight's mobility). A few early upgrades can make a big difference in their effectiveness.
- Explore Thoroughly: Ancient Souls are often tucked away in obscure corners. Don't rush through areas; meticulously search every nook and cranny, break suspicious walls, and investigate elevated platforms. Many are found in the Verboten Domain and Stockade, often requiring the use of specific movement abilities acquired later.
Spirit Skill Slots: Customizing Your Loadout
Lily can equip a total of six Spirits at any given time: two primary attack Spirits and four secondary utility Spirits. This allows for significant strategic depth and customization.
- Primary Attack Spirits: These are assigned to your main attack buttons (typically X/Square and Y/Triangle). They are your primary damage dealers and have no cooldown. Examples include the Umbral Knight (melee combo) and the White Priestess (ranged projectile).
- Secondary Utility Spirits: These are assigned to the shoulder buttons (LB/L1, RB/R1, LT/L2, RT/R2). They often have a cooldown after use but provide powerful, situational abilities. This can range from defensive maneuvers like the Headless Defender's shield to area-of-effect attacks like the Western Merchant's explosive barrels.
Optimizing Your Skill Slots:
- Synergy is Key: Consider how your chosen Spirits complement each other. Do you have a strong melee primary and need a ranged option for flying enemies? Does your primary attack leave you vulnerable, making a defensive secondary Spirit a good choice?
- Adapt to Encounters: Don't be afraid to change your Spirit loadout before challenging a boss or entering a particularly difficult area. Some bosses are highly susceptible to specific damage types or attack patterns. For example, the Guardian Siegfried can be effectively countered with Spirits that allow for quick repositioning.
- Experimentation: The game offers a wide variety of Spirits. Don't stick to the same few throughout your entire playthrough. Experiment with different combinations to discover powerful synergies and find what best suits your playstyle.
Spirit Relics: Further Enhancements
While not directly part of a "skill tree," Relics play a vital role in Spirit progression by enhancing their effectiveness. Relics are passive buffs that Lily can equip, and many directly impact Spirit performance.
- Damage Boost Relics: Relics like the Amulet of the Blighted or the Broken Music Box directly increase the damage output of your Spirits. Prioritize these if you're struggling with enemy health pools.
- Cooldown Reduction Relics: For your secondary Spirits, relics that reduce cooldowns, such as the Fallen Priestess's Prayer, are invaluable. This allows for more frequent use of powerful abilities.
- Specific Spirit Enhancements: Some relics provide unique benefits to particular Spirits. Keep an eye out for these, as they can transform a good Spirit into an exceptional one.
Remember to regularly check your inventory for new Relics and equip them strategically to further empower your chosen Spirit loadout.
