Map Legend & Icons
Navigating the blighted lands of Land's End is crucial for survival and uncovering its secrets. The in-game map, accessed via the pause menu, is your most vital tool. Understanding its legend and the various icons will streamline your exploration, help you locate critical items, and identify areas of interest or danger.
Map Navigation Basics
- Opening the Map: Press the designated map button (typically 'Select' or 'View' on most controllers, or 'M' on keyboard) to bring up the full area map.
- Zooming: Use the left stick or directional pad to pan across the map. There is no zoom function, so pay close attention to the details.
- Area Names: The current area's name will be displayed prominently at the top of the map screen, e.g., "White Parish," "Stockade," or "Veridian Lake."
- Unexplored Areas: Areas you haven't yet visited will appear as dark, undefined regions. Exploring these areas will gradually reveal their layout and icons.
Key Map Icons Explained
Below is a detailed breakdown of the icons you'll encounter on your map and what they signify:
- Lily's Current Position (White Lily Icon): This icon, depicting a small white Lily, marks your exact location on the map. It's essential for orienting yourself and planning your next move.
- Respite (Bench Icon): Represented by a small wooden bench, these are your save points and fast travel locations.
- Actionable Step: Always activate a Respite when you find one. This not only saves your progress but also allows you to fast travel between activated Respite points by interacting with the bench. This is invaluable for backtracking or reaching distant areas quickly.
- Strategy: Prioritize finding new Respite points, especially before challenging boss encounters or venturing into unknown, dangerous territories.
- Boss Encounter (Skull Icon): A prominent skull icon indicates the location of a major boss battle.
- Actionable Step: Prepare thoroughly before approaching a skull icon. Ensure your Lily's level is adequate, your Spirits are upgraded, and you have a good supply of Prayer Fragments.
- Strategy: Consider exploring surrounding areas for upgrades or new Spirits before tackling a boss if you're struggling.
- Relic (Gear Icon): This icon, resembling a small gear or cog, marks the location of a Relic. Relics provide passive buffs and abilities to Lily.
- Actionable Step: Always seek out Relics. They are crucial for enhancing Lily's survivability and combat effectiveness. Examples include the Amulet of the Fallen (increases attack power) or the Fungus Bloom (grants additional healing).
- Location Hint: Many Relics are hidden behind environmental puzzles or require specific Spirit abilities to reach. For instance, the Bloody Garland in the Stockade requires the use of the Gerrod, the Royal Aegis Spirit to break through a wall.
- Spirit (Spirit Orb Icon): A glowing orb icon denotes the presence of a new Spirit. Spirits are your primary means of attack and defense.
- Actionable Step: Collect every Spirit you find. Each offers unique attacks and utility.
- Strategy: Experiment with different Spirit combinations to find what works best for your playstyle and specific enemy encounters. For example, the ranged attacks of Ulv, the Mad Knight are excellent for flying enemies, while Gerrod, the Royal Aegis provides powerful close-quarters combat.
- Stamina Fragment (Green Leaf Icon): This icon, a small green leaf, indicates a Stamina Fragment. Collecting five Stamina Fragments permanently increases Lily's maximum Stamina.
- Actionable Step: Prioritize collecting these. Increased Stamina allows for more dodges and Spirit attacks, significantly improving combat flow.
- Location Hint: Stamina Fragments are often found in slightly out-of-the-way areas or as rewards for overcoming minor platforming challenges.
- HP Fragment (Red Heart Icon): A red heart icon signifies an HP Fragment. Collecting five HP Fragments permanently increases Lily's maximum HP.
- Actionable Step: Essential for increasing Lily's survivability. More HP means you can take more hits before succumbing to the Blight.
- Strategy: If you're struggling with a particular area or boss, seeking out HP Fragments can provide the necessary buffer to overcome the challenge.
- Locked Door/Path (Locked Gate Icon): A gate with a padlock indicates a path that is currently inaccessible.
- Actionable Step: These often require a specific key item, a new Spirit ability, or the defeat of a particular boss to unlock. Make a mental note of these locations and return when you have the necessary tools.
- Example: The gate leading to the Twin Spires from the Cathedral Cloister typically requires a specific key found much later in the game.
- Unexplored Path (Dashed Line): A dashed line on the map indicates a path that exists but you have not yet traversed.
- Actionable Step: Follow these dashed lines to uncover new areas, find hidden items, or progress the main story.
