Ruined Castle
The former heart of Land's End, this decaying monument to the kingdom's downfall is the final major zone of the game. It serves as a true test of skill, combining the most difficult enemies and platforming challenges from every previous region. Access is not granted by an item, but by progression and ability. You must first defeat Guardian Silva in the Verboten Domain to acquire the Whisper (air dash) ability. Combined with the Guardian's Leap (double jump) from Guardian Siegrid, these skills are mandatory to breach the castle's entrance and navigate its treacherous halls.
Notable Threats
The castle is patrolled by the most elite Blighted, often appearing in overwhelming groups. Conserve your Prayers and approach each encounter with severe caution. These enemies hit hard and have significant health pools.
- Royal Guard: These towering, heavily armored knights are extremely difficult to stagger. They use a massive shield to block nearly all frontal assaults and retaliate with powerful lunges. Use heavy-hitting spirits like Gerrod, the Elder Warrior to break their stance, or bait out their attacks to strike them from behind or during their recovery animations.
- Castle Sentinel: Winged abominations that patrol the skies of the castle ramparts and high chambers. They attack with rapid-fire projectiles and an aggressive dive-bomb. They are highly evasive, making them a priority target. Use ranged spirits like Western Merchant or precise aerial attacks with high-reaching spirits like Siegrid to bring them down quickly.
- Fallen Knight: An elite version of the common knight enemy, but far deadlier. They are incredibly fast, aggressive, and chain together multi-hit sword combos and lunging thrusts that cover significant distance. Often found in pairs or guarding critical paths. Their attacks are parryable with Guardian's Wings, but the timing is tight. Crowd control spirits like Incompetent Sinner or high-poise damage from Fallen Archer can interrupt their onslaught and create a crucial opening.
- Palace Spearman: Agile guards who utilize long spears for devastating, long-range thrusts. They often position themselves behind tougher foes like Royal Guards, poking at you from safety. They can also perform a wide sweep to control space. Due to their range and positioning, they should be a high-priority target; use a quick spirit like Western Merchant or a well-timed dash attack to close the distance and eliminate them.
Platforming and Hazards
Navigating the castle requires mastery of all your acquired skills. Expect complex sequences that demand precise timing, ability-chaining, and quick thinking. Failure often means an instant return to the last Respite.
- Blighted Rain: In the outdoor rampart sections, a constant, damaging red rain will fall. This environmental hazard inflicts continuous damage to Lily, forcing you to move quickly or seek shelter under overhangs while dealing with enemies.
- Vertical Grapple Shafts: The castle is defined by its verticality. Expect long, uninterrupted ascents using the Executioner's Hook. These sections are frequently patrolled by Castle Sentinels and other ranged enemies, forcing you to hook, dodge projectiles, and attack while suspended in mid-air.
- Crumbling Floors: Many corridors feature floors that crumble away shortly after being stepped on. These often conceal instant-death spike pits below, demanding rapid and precise use of the Whisper air dash to cross safely.
- Submerged Dungeons: The lower levels of the castle are flooded with Blighted water, which will rapidly damage Lily. Full exploration is impossible without the Heretic's Mask to negate water damage and the Witch's Bubble to dash while submerged. These hidden areas often contain valuable secrets, including Relics and Blight caches.
Key Locations & Collectibles
This area is rich with the game's most powerful upgrades and critical story items. Thorough exploration is essential and highly rewarded.
- Respite Points: The castle is vast. Securing each Respite is critical. Key locations are: Maelstrom Ramparts, Guest Chambers, Castle Keep, and the final respite before the throne room, Royal Chambers.
- Story Item: Fretia's Ring: An essential item required to unlock Ending C, the true ending. It is found in a hidden room accessible from the Castle Keep respite. From the respite, proceed right into the large vertical shaft, drop down, and look for a breakable wall on the left side. Dash through to find the chamber containing the ring.
- Relic: Immortal's Crest: A top-tier defensive relic that allows you to survive a single lethal hit with 1 HP remaining (similar to a Fairy). Located in a chest high up in a vertical room filled with grappling points and flying enemies, demanding platforming mastery to reach.
- Permanent Upgrades: Multiple caches of Stagnant Blight and Furious Blight are hidden throughout the area. Search behind illusory walls, in hard-to-reach platforming sections, and in the submerged areas to maximize your Spirit and Relic potential for the final fight.
Boss Encounters
The Ruined Castle is home to the final confrontations of Lily's journey. The boss you face in the Royal Chambers depends entirely on whether you have fulfilled the requirements for the true ending.
Blighted Lord (Ending A & B)
At the top of the castle awaits the Blighted Lord, a monstrous figure grotesquely fused to the throne. This is the final boss for players who have not acquired Fretia's Ring or choose not to use it during the encounter.
- Key Attacks: The Lord's primary attacks include wide, sweeping slashes with his massive arm-blade, a powerful ground pound that creates a damaging shockwave across the entire floor, and summoning a storm of spectral swords that rain down from above.
- Strategy: Stay mobile and use the air dash to dodge through his sweeps. The ground pound has a clear audio-visual cue; jump and dash to avoid the shockwave. Prioritize destroying the spectral swords he summons to keep the arena clear. Spirits with high damage and multiple hits, like Dark Witch Eleine or Fallen Archer, are excellent for chipping away at his health from a safe distance.
The Fount of Blight (True Final Boss - Ending C)
If you have acquired Fretia's Ring and use it on the Blighted Lord at the start of the fight, you will purify him and initiate the true final battle against The Fount of Blight. This is a grueling, multi-phase endurance fight that will test all of your skills.
Phase 1: Lily's Doppelgänger
The Fount first manifests as a dark copy of Lily, using corrupted versions of your own spirits against you. She is extremely fast, relentless, and aggressive.
- Strategy: This is a duel of pure reflexes. Her attacks are fast and hard to predict on a first attempt. The Guardian's Wings parry is highly effective if you can master the timing, but dodging is safer. Use your fastest spirits (like Chief Guardian) for quick hits and wait for small openings after she completes a combo.
Phase 2: The Fount Ascendant
Upon defeating the doppelgänger, the true form of The Fount of Blight emerges—a colossal, stationary creature whose weak point is the glowing core in its "head."
- Key Attacks: This phase is about pattern recognition. The boss will use screen-wide laser beams, summon streams of homing projectiles, and slam massive blighted arms onto the platforms.
- Strategy: Focus entirely on dodging the telegraphed attacks—survival is paramount. The lasers have obvious charge-up animations, giving you time to find a safe zone. Use aerial spirits like Hoenir, Keeper of the Abyss, or any ranged spirit to deal consistent damage to the head. When the arms slam down, they become temporary platforms and can be attacked for significant damage. This is a marathon, not a sprint; play defensively and learn the patterns.
