System Development and Infrastructure
Developing your systems effectively is the backbone of any successful empire in Endless Space. A well-planned infrastructure ensures a steady flow of resources, robust defenses, and a thriving population. This section will guide you through the critical steps and strategies for optimizing your system development.
Initial System Setup: The First Steps
Upon colonizing a new system, your immediate priorities should be establishing basic infrastructure to kickstart growth and resource generation. Don't just build blindly; consider the system's unique planetary traits and resource bonuses.
- Population Growth: Early on, focus on increasing your population. Buildings like the Xenotourism Agency (located under the "Growth" tab in the System Management screen) are crucial for accelerating population growth, especially on planets with high food production. Prioritize these on your homeworld and other high-potential systems.
- Food Production: Planets with high Food output should be designated as your primary food producers. Research technologies in the "Science & Exploration" tree that unlock food-boosting improvements, such as the Hydroponics Lab. Access this via the "Research" screen (F4) and navigate to the appropriate tech branch.
- Industry Focus: Identify planets with strong Industry output. These will be your manufacturing hubs. Construct industrial improvements like the Industrial Complex and later the Advanced Industrial Plant (unlocked through the "Applied Sciences" research branch). These are found in the "Industry" tab of your System Management.
Strategic Infrastructure Placement
Not all systems are created equal. Tailor your infrastructure to maximize each system's inherent strengths.
- Specialized Systems:
- Science Systems: For systems with high Science output, prioritize buildings like the Research Lab and Academy of Sciences (found in the "Science" tab). These will be crucial for accelerating your technological progress. Look for planets with the "Research Bonus" trait.
- Dust Systems: Systems rich in Dust should focus on economic buildings such as the Marketplace and Galactic Bank (under the "Dust" tab). These are your financial centers, generating the currency needed for everything from ship repairs to hero recruitment.
- Defense Systems: Border systems or those with strategic importance should be heavily fortified. Construct Orbital Fortifications and Planetary Shield Generators (found in the "Defense" tab) to deter enemy incursions. assign a strong Military Hero to these systems for additional defensive bonuses.
- System Development Queue: Always keep your system development queue full. Access this by clicking on a system in the galaxy map and then selecting the "System Management" tab. Drag and drop improvements into the queue based on your strategic needs. Remember, you can reorder items in the queue at any time.
Advanced Infrastructure and Upgrades
As your empire grows, you'll unlock more advanced buildings and upgrades. These are vital for maintaining your competitive edge.
- Planetary Exploitation: Once researched, exploit unique planetary anomalies and resources. For example, a planet with the "Rare Earth Elements" anomaly can be exploited with the Rare Earth Mine to significantly boost Industry and Science. These exploitation options appear directly on the planet's overview within the System Management screen once the prerequisite technology is researched.
- System Upgrades: Don't overlook the generic system-wide upgrades available through research, such as Improved Infrastructure or Advanced Logistics. These provide across-the-board bonuses to all planets within a system, making them incredibly efficient. These are typically found in the "Empire Development" or "Applied Sciences" research trees.
- Hero Assignments: Assigning a hero to a system can dramatically boost its output. A "Governor" type hero, for instance, can provide significant bonuses to Food, Industry, Dust, or Science depending on their skills. Access hero assignment via the "Heroes" screen (F3) and drag a hero portrait to the desired system.
By carefully planning your system development and leveraging the unique traits of each planet, you can create a highly efficient and powerful empire capable of dominating the Endless Space galaxy.
