Terraforming and Planet Specialization

Mastering terraforming and planet specialization is crucial for maximizing your empire's output in Endless Space. By strategically altering planet types and focusing their development, you can create highly efficient systems tailored to your specific needs.

Understanding Terraforming

Terraforming allows you to change a planet's climate and type, making it more hospitable or suitable for specific resource generation. This process is unlocked through research and requires significant Dust and time. Not all planets can be terraformed to all types; the available options depend on the planet's initial climate and the technologies you've researched.

Terraforming Technologies:

  • Basic Terraforming: Found early in the Science & Exploration tech tree, this unlocks initial terraforming options for barren and cold planets.
  • Advanced Terraforming: Deeper in the Science & Exploration tree, this expands your options to include more temperate and exotic planet types.
  • Extreme Terraforming: Late-game technology that allows for the most radical transformations, such as turning gas giants into habitable worlds (with the right pre-requisites).

Terraforming Process:

  1. Select a System: Navigate to the system view where the target planet resides.
  2. Select a Planet: Click on the specific planet you wish to terraform.
  3. Access Terraforming Options: In the planet's detail panel, locate the "Terraform" button. This will display a list of available transformations and their associated costs (Dust) and completion times (turns).
  4. Initiate Terraforming: Choose your desired planet type and confirm the action. The planet will then enter a terraforming state, during which its output may be reduced, and it cannot be colonized or developed further until complete.

Strategy Tip: Prioritize terraforming planets in systems with high strategic resource deposits or those you intend to specialize heavily. Early terraforming can be costly, so ensure you have a stable Dust income.

Planet Specialization

Once a planet has been terraformed (or if it naturally possesses a desirable type), you can specialize its development to enhance specific outputs. This is achieved through building specific improvements and assigning population to optimize their production.

Common Specialization Types:

  • Industrial Worlds: Focus on producing Industry.
    • Ideal Planet Types: Arid, Jungle, Lava, Ash.
    • Key Improvements: Industrial Complex, Automated Factories, Mining Exploitation.
    • Population Assignment: Prioritize population to Industry slots.
    • Strategic Resources: Exploiting Titanium or Hyperium on these worlds significantly boosts production.
  • Science Worlds: Dedicated to generating Science.
    • Ideal Planet Types: Ocean, Arctic, Tundra, Gas Giant (with appropriate tech).
    • Key Improvements: Research Labs, Observatories, Academy of Sciences.
    • Population Assignment: Prioritize population to Science slots.
    • Strategic Resources: Exploiting Adamantian or Anti-Matter can provide substantial Science bonuses.
  • Dust Worlds: Optimized for Dust income.
    • Ideal Planet Types: Desert, Steppes, Forest.
    • Key Improvements: Trade Guilds, Financial Centers, Galactic Stock Exchange.
    • Population Assignment: Prioritize population to Dust slots.
    • Strategic Resources: Exploiting Orichalcix or Quadrinix can greatly increase Dust output.
  • Food Worlds: Designed to produce abundant Food, supporting larger populations.
    • Ideal Planet Types: Forest, Jungle, Terran, Ocean.
    • Key Improvements: Hydroponic Farms, Agricultural Districts, Gene Banks.
    • Population Assignment: Prioritize population to Food slots.
    • Strategic Resources: Exploiting Mithril or Palladian can enhance Food production.

Advanced Specialization Strategies:

  • System-Wide Synergy: Don't just specialize individual planets; consider the entire system. A system with one strong Industrial world, one Science world, and one Food world can be highly self-sufficient and efficient.
  • Resource Exploitation: Always check for strategic and luxury resources on planets before specializing. A planet with a high Titanium deposit is a prime candidate for industrial specialization, even if its base type isn't perfectly ideal.
  • Population Management: Actively manage your population assignments on specialized planets. Use the "Population Management" tab in the system view to drag and drop population units to their most productive roles.
  • Hero Assignment: Assigning a Hero with relevant skills (e.g., +Industry, +Science) to a specialized system can provide significant boosts to its primary output.

By carefully planning your terraforming efforts and strategically specializing your planets, you can build an empire that outproduces and out-researches your rivals, leading you to victory in Endless Space.
